An E39 M5 is no joke...those things beat the ground just like domestic V8's when they've got exhaust, and they moveee on the highway. One of the worst beatings i ever had N/A was from my friends E39 M5 with Short throw shifter, ram air, Chip, and exhaust.
The likelyhood of breaking a part on the BMW from wear and tear is little. Tranny, rear end, and suspension components are top notch...but for instance if you missed a downshift and blew the motor or something it'd cost you a pretty penny. And labor on any parts will be expensive, which is where I think the Dichotomy is. My friend and i install all our own parts so...for him it's not that much more expensive for most things. But expect labor to be high with any Aftermarket parts installation on a Bimmer. I will say that alot of parts are more expensive, but if you shop around and in the right places...some parts can be had for a fair amount of money.

There is no comparing a Mustang with a BMW. They are not the same kind of vehicle. My Mustang was bought new in 03, it's got every option available except the Mach 1000 audio system and it's not a convertable. It cost a whopping 22,300.00 brand new. I could have bought any car I wanted, I wanted an American Icon, one I grew up with. As far as build quality goes I'm sure BMW's are good cars but they are expensive to maintain. My car is driven daily and raced at the track a ton. I drive the poor thing all over the country to events packed with slicks, coolers chairs etc. Unpack it and race. 50,000 miles, 300 passes down the 1/4 mile. Stock motor runs high 12's and get's 23 mpg at 75 mph. The car has never been in for repair, has the original tires, plugs and brakes on it. My last two new vehicles have been a 98 Expedition and my GT, combined six and half years over 140,000 miles and not one day in the shop. So I don't think your dad knows too much about Ford's. By the way I also own a 2003 Chrysler Crossfire which is made in Germany by Mercerdes and it's a nice little car but it needs alot more maintainance then my Mustang and my cheap *** domestic car can blow it off the road for 13 grand less. Tell your dad you live in America and want to drive an American car. If he wants to pay for the whole thing then I'd take the bimmer.

I'd show him the reliability ratings on VW from JD Power, CR, etc. If he still is crying for you to get a VW after that, get one.
Then pull the I told you so every time its in the shop. Which will be ALOT.
