Default Winter storage for your pony

How many of you put your pony away for the snowy weather? Last year I drove it because I had no choice but this year im lookin at a winter beater. My question is, I have a loan still on my car and obviously I dont want to fork out full coverage insurance on it when it sits in the garage over the winter. Our vehicle insurance is through the same place as our home owners insurance. I also know the bank requires full coverage on the vehicle. My question is, how do you guys work around this with a un-paid for stang and its stored away for the winter?

Matt, you have a few options. State Farm has a special insurance program for this situation. That's what I do now.

When I was in the service, I put my car in storage while on deployment. I just dropped it completely if I recall. It took the bank about three months to figure out what I did and then I just blew them off and played dumb when I got back. At that point, what could they do? I don't advise this option.

You don't need full coverage or liabilty when its stored. Just get comprehensive only....that basically means something has to hit your car. If your garage falls in, somebody drives thru your garage and smashes your car etc..its covered. Your car cannot hit anything (IE..move) I have done this for many years with no problems...I too used State Farm but any insurance company can do it. Its just not something alot of people do. You might have to explain the situation to the bank if they cry about it. Actually might be better to inquire about all of this before doing it.

One more thing, if you drop insurance completely and the bank finds out, they will insure it for you...lemme tell you, not good deal there. They have the right to do it, and you will pay their inflated premiums. It is in the loan contract you signed, trust me.

If you have a loan, they will not let you just get comp on the car. I have been down this route before. But, your experience could be different.

Check with your insurance proivder. Mine (which is state farm) has a special low-use/storage rate. It basically reduces my insurance by about 30% when the car is stored in the garage. Who knows, maybe they are screwing me.

When I was in the military in the above example, the bank tried to get me with their rates, but I told them to pack sand. They had no other choice because I had the car in a professional storage facility and the fee included comp insurance.

Haha! Snow? What is snow? I don't even wear a jacket sometimes on Christmas day. I will be heading to New York City by myself Dec 16-22. Decided not to drive the Mustang and rent a car instead.

I had the offer to move with my dad when he moves down there at the end of the year. Right now I have family in marco island, but hell be in naples.

Ya right now its 150 a month for full coverage. Im 22 with a clean driving record so thats a big chunk of change to be paying when its sitting.

Mine gets covered for winter but Ill get it out at least once a month to stretch its legs. But only when the roads are dry and free of salt. Full coverage with a couple xtras is only $88 a month so its not a big deal.

Different state and different banks I'm sure do different things. I have had a "garage car" for most of my driving career (17years) 99% had loans and I did this with all of them. As for getting screwed, you most likely are. I actually just talked to my State Farm agent Tuesday. I got a quote from Allied Insurance for my home and vehicles and it was $450 a year cheaper for BETTER coverage. Know what my State Farm agent said? " You mind if I get a copy of the Allied quotes so I can show my bosses what I am up against?"

Driving it in the winter is a lot easier than people make it out to be. I got stuck in my driveway with a foot of snow, and that was the only time. I had to be pulled out of my front yard by my boss.

Have them insure it as a recreational vehicle. If you only drive it part time, you may be able to get this option for your car. I have American family and they only charge me $56.00 a month fully cover my Stang as a recreational vehicle.

State Farm will let you have comprehension on your vehicle if you tell them its a luxury and that you dont drive it in the winter. But you have to be in accordance with your bank or credit union. Have the insurance company fax a letter to your creditor about dropping the full coverage because the vehicle is in storage and supply evidence of where it will be stored. I do this every year but i had some slight problems when i was still making payments.
