Depends really.. If they're totally blacked out then yeah they should be illegal.. Just lightly smoked on the other hand, no.

Mine are completely black. I haven't had any problems or been pulled over for them. Even when i got my speeding warning the cop didn't say anything about them

I think the only way a cop around here could tell if there were two mustangs side-by-side, one stock and the other tinted. It should be like window tint, certain amount should be ok. Blacking the lights out can be dangerous though. I had tinted headlights and had trouble seeing at night.

i agree, some level of tint should be perfecltly acceptable. i always worry about mine but i have had mine tinted for over a year now and haven't gotten pulled over yet.

the cop was talking about the reflectors built in to the tail lights. on 94-98 it has a strip at the bottom that is also a reflector. so at night when your car is parked on the side of the road other drivers see your car better. don't know where it is on the new edge but if you are tinted too dark, that reflector doesn't work as well as it should i guess.

that wouldn't work because you can see the 3m tint clear as day, he would have called me a fool.

I had the cheapo black covers for my headlights. Looks good in the day, but nite you couldn't see chit. Plus they didn't really fit that well.

As for tailights, I was gonna get some, but now I'm not. I want people to see me braking without any doubt.. Got enough people riding my *** already. And way too many dumbasses who seem to be oblivious to me slowing for a turn or traffic in front of me. I'd like some mildly smoked tails like the headlights I have..

I am going to laugh my *** off if someone on here gets pulled over, gives some kind of excuse like Krenogin suggested and the cop ends up being a Mustang enthusiast like Matt (Slim) is and knows that they are bullshitting.

That would be pretty damn awesome.

Pretty sure you dont have to be a mustang enthusiast to know when someone is bullshitting. Especially some bullshit like that.

I never understood why you guys want to blackout your tail lights so other people have a harder time seeing your brake lights come on. For me I would rather not be rear ended.

I was behind a crown vic last week with dark smoked tail lights and I could not tell he was on his brakes during the day till I was about 10 feet or so behind him. Seems like a stupid fad to me. Same with tinting the headlights. Why would you want to have less light at night is beyond me.

I have my tail lights tinted, which is legal in NC as long as you can see it 300ft at night ... which I think you can. Ive never been behind my car 300ft at night. Probably has something to do with the fact that in NC you can have non-functioning tail lights and be fine.

Anywho I like the look. And even during the day its more than enough combined with my third brake light to see if im stopping. Plus im hoping my **** gets wrecked.

Not necessarily. But I really don't think a lot of people know the difference. Don't forget that 99% of the people in this world are stupid beyond words.

Dustin, I agree with you. I can't stand taillights that are tinted too dark. It is too difficult to see.

spike, if it is done right you can see it just fine during the day. using paint and stuff that is not designed for actually tinting tail lights is where people make the mistake and hide their brake lights. mine are tinted and you can see mine fine when i brake during the day. my third brake light has no tint on it as well.

I have my tails tinted with the film, but its totally visible during the day and I have my 3rd brake light untinted. I've seen some cars that have the tint so dark that you barely notice any change in light output during the day until youre 2ft from it. That's when it becomes a problem.

Headlight tinting just looks dumb. Its especially stupid if you have OEM headlights because they aren't too bright, even with brighter bulbs.

I think that has a lot to do with this town dude. There are a LOT of stupid people here. I too see them everyday. And that's just from a traffic standpoint.

My favorite saying to my wife when we are out driving is " Look at that stupid MFer." or " Lookout for that dumbass in the other lane". Just cruise down Skibo Rd. on a Saturday and count the dumb ***** you encounter. It's amazing because this road is actually user friendly and wide enough to hold a Nascar race. It's just the idiots who drive on it, that makes a wreck waiting to happen.. Sorry to get off topic. and rant...

Oh my god dont even get me started on the tards around here when it comes to driving.

In the left lane doing 20 under the speed limit.
Doing 50 over the speed limit
2 retards in both lanes doing 20 under
that ricer that loves to weave in and out for no reason. - I weave around the retards, but the difference is I have track expierence (real track autox) so know what my car can do. On a prepped track or regular pavement.

I wake up EVERY MORNING just fine and dandy ... maybe tired but in a decent mood. I drive from Hope Mills to Ft Bragg ... and im in a homicidal rage by time I reach work and it ***** up my whole morning.
