that guy wasn't the least bit bored. He'd saved up for years to afford the hunt of a lifetime and he got what he paid for.
You've apparently never hunted. I have personally shot a deer off a cliff in a similar fashion and I tell you what, it's a helluva lot better for them to go ahead and fall than for someone to have to go up and ride the corpse down the hill (which I've also had to do... think "meat sled").

.223 will take one out. I hunt with a .308 which will just about drop them in place with a well placed shot. lol if you want to realllly drop a deer shoot a .300 win mag, a rifle that shoots a .300 can easily take down big game beyond the 500 yard mark. My uncle took out a deer with a .300 at about 950 yards. all i can say that was an awesome sight to see!
