Default Chevy Z06 vs Ford GT

If we want to compare the new zvette to something, more fair it be something that comes from the factory with similar performance. About the same power levels, top speed -

But what would happen in between 0 and 200?

Based on performance, these 2 make a natural comparison. If Z06 can hit the magik 200mph mark, it will be by far the cheapest factory stock item available in the market to do so.

Dollar comparison: you'll need twice as many to buy the GT, plus a bit more to bribe a dealer somewhere.

Cruize comparison: no doubt you'll draw stares with the GT, and be ignored with the stock-appearing Z06 (New Cobra would get you more stares and thumbs up, too - oops, thats the other thread).

Apples and apples, except for the money, of course.

Should we say the z06 is a far better car because it only costs 70k as compared to a 150k car, so with a few thousand dollars the zooh will have more power and thus by your anology a better car!
So with the left over money that you have from not spending it on a GT you could go and have yourself a cruise/trip!

Default "Better"

"Better" is one of those terms I use only in Vegas, and never in my analogy.
"Value" might be more interesting. Or "Logical", where dollars and cents are important considerations. Since both of these cars are out of my economic comfort zone, a more esoteric analysis seems called for.

The GT is a quasi-factory exotic that is probably worth every dime to the clientelle who prize its star appeal and undeniable performance levels.

The Z06 is a factory quasi-exotic that is a relative raving bargain compared to its factory produced 200mph competition everywhere (depending, of course, on what its competition does in the next 12 months).

Compared to its 200mph brethren in some scientific road test (price not a factor) it will do well but probably not equal many of the traits of its ferrari/lambo/mercedes/koenig competition. Any competition of this group that included cost would be won by the Z on merit, hands down.

But of course, that's just another example like the comparo with the Shelby Cobra GT500, which was again a cheaper car with more upward mobility than the Z06. But that's not the charm of this comparison. The idea that someone could scrimp and save and buy the $70k superchevy is not totally beyond the pale - whereas the $200000-$1000000+ exotics are just pictures in a magazine and numbers on a graph.

We've entered the area I alluded to earlier - the market where money doesn't matter, and curb appeal and street shock are more desired than g forces and horsepower.

The debate bogs down when the people you're discussing consider a trip to Cancun with your best girl "passe", have no idea (and could care less) what their corporate identity tax lawyers pay for their insurance, and gauge the value of their possessions more in the way they are perceived by others rather than by the use and enjoyment they derive from them.

This starts to happen once you get into the luxury/exotic price range, which the new Z06 is nipping at the bottom of with its near $70000 msrp. (Look for something derived from the Z06 from Caddilac that will do more than "nip".)

If I've taken a jab at anyone, inlcuding the ricers, I didn't mean to. Numbers enter into all the decisions normal people make about their cars - how much money for how much car, and then, how much money for how much curb appeal, horsepower, speed, luxury, etc. Analysis without numbers is like a car without tires - lots of heat, smoke and noise, but not going anywhere.
