Gripped with 50mm 1.8 AF

Lmao jack! I've been looking to do an upgrade for a while now. I was surprised at the deal I got from this guy on amazon, should be here Thursday.

How much did the flash run you? That's something I haven't explored yet. Everything I've shot has been with available light.

 

They can be found for right around 200 bucks. though Amazon, Adorama, or Cameta. I really cant say enough about these flashes, they do such a damn good job. Learning flash is a bit of a curve though, its not as simple as attaching it and running the iTTL system. Well, at first that is how it seems cause it is kind of a dummyproof system, But the more you play with it the more you will learn the best ways to apply it and realize there is quite a bit of depth to the system. Just remember, wwhen you use the flash the CLS system meters the scene twice, hit the shutter halfway it performs a matrix metering on the whole image, when you hit the shutter release the pre-flash meters the scene again with a center weighted metering, with THAT information it determines the proper flash output and it does a hell of a job. The big thing is learning the best way to apply it.

Using bounce flash indoors does wonders. The pop-up flash is somewhat BS in my view, and only good for a slight fill or da DA DAHHH... COMMANDER MODE BITCHES!!!!!

The D90 slightly outperforms the D300 in high ISOs but the D300 is very comparable. Combine it with a fast lens like the $120 50mm 1.8 AF lens and using flash indoors is very optional if you can get the subjects to sit still. Problem is any lens at its widest gets a bit soft. When the 50mm 1.8 is at f/5.6 it is scalpel sharp.

Just remember, dont use S priority with Indoor shots if you care about sharpness, go with A or M, certainly dont use AF-C (which uses a shutter release priority not a focus priority like it did in the D40/D60, so it will take the shot weather it is focused or not)


Available light is great, the D300 is going to do wonders for you, but remember Nikons CLS is the best flash system ever developed. It is highly flexable and adaptable, and can be an excellent tool once you figure it out.

 

i have the 50mm 1.8, its a great lens! definitely one of my favorites. im so giddy to try this out in some low light shooting.

D60 with the 50mm, Sigma 70-300, and Nikkor 18-55

 

Yer gonna love the AF on the 50mm. lol.

The D300 has a beefier autofocus meter than the D90, and the D90 can go from 0 to infinity back to zero in less than a second. Fast as hell for focus. The D300 will be even quicker.


Do you have to have the aperature ring locked on 1.8 for the D60 to meter?

 

Definitely check out the SB-600. I have one and absolutely love it.

yeah im excited about gaining the AF on the 50. it does need to be locked for it to work at all on the D60.

Oh hey, if anyone wants a screen protector, buy one of these (matching your camera of course) i just got one for my D90, paid about 11 bucks shipped. it fits perfect, no bubbles possible, made of glass, and it blends right in, you wouldnt know it was there unless it was pointed out to you
