the no tax thing is HUGE....what more could ya want? my gripe is that of all the persecuted groups the indians might genuinely deserve the least...cause theyre suffering was more or less the result of their own screwed up business dealing...i dont care how simple you are...if you look out over a prairie and see lakes and forests and then you turn to a settler and say,"okay i'll take two blankets and a pipe for the land"...then you deserve the shaft...hell i'd cheat ya and pillage ya too if you gave me a mountain for a beaded necklass...i find it real hard to feel sorry for a guy who gives away his back yard for a bottle of whiskey...and that fat chief obviously hasnt suffered a day in his life

I have sympathy for those that were actually put through hard times...indians being invaded, blacks with slavery...but it rubs me the wrong way when people act like they are owed something for a dilemma that happened way before their lifetime, from people who had nothing to do with it.

As far as the actual subject here though, I'm pretty sick of this sort of thing myself. I truly don't care about it, as long as it's not happening now.

oh hell yeah that would be fun...dude theres a guy i work with who goes to south america once a year and lives among the bush people for months...alls he wears is a loin cloth and actually hunts for his dinner with them...he says its awesome....guy married one of them and has a family there...i really wanna try it for awhile but think about it :
1. live totally free without any modern technology running through woods like a wild animal
2. dont have to take a chick to dinner and movie...find a cute village girl and just bark at her...literally before boinkin her in the trees...
but......
3. deodorant doesnt exist there among people running through the hot woods...
chuckle...thats sort of a deal breaker...i bet pocahontas was as hot lookin as they come but imagine the smell she musta had with no secret roll on

there are a lot of people who could have invaded them and either genocided them or forced them to throw away thier history and heritage.
they should be thankful the people who took over this land allowed them to practice thier beliefs.
but yeah, i think it is horseshit that they get anything out of this. I diddnt do it, my dad diddnt do it, my grandfather diddnt do it, my great grandfather diddnt do it.... for christs sake life isnt fair, get over it already

So am I the only card carrying indian here then?
BTW, Know what you're talking about guys... Indians do pay taxes like everyone else. My full blood relatives pay just like my half-breed relatives, federal and state. THE ONLY TAX WE DON'T PAY is normally the property taxes and that's ONLY if you live on the reservation (akin to living in a box of **** that's on fire) and ONLY because the Federal govt manages all indian lands in "trust" (trust however has nothing to do with it).
Sorry street and water et al, you guys are off on this one. Yeah, gut-eaters lost fair and square and deservedly so... 15 thousand goddamned years alone in a supermarket and they couldn't even develop a fuggin wheel. But to say that getting screwed to this day on every matter (my tribe has been fighting for federal recognition for over 100 years too...) is just and having the shitty shitty shitty land we were forced onto (which by the way has never been sufficient in quality or quantity to feed the people it homes) be the only recompense, then to have the mineral rights to our own land sold out from under us by the Feds... yeah. That's the first time I think so many of you have shown so little humanity. I'm ashamed.

You're not the only one R3d. I'm 3/4 cherokee, with a card to prove it. I'm also part of the actual tribe in that I'm registered to vote on the issues. But even so, I'm tired of all the PC bull. As long as they (the gov't) live up to the treaties THEY started, I don't have anything to bitch about. Does it all irk me? yes. But so does a lot of other things in history. Having said that, I don't want or need a formal apology from the Gov't.

I'm way sick of the PC BS (I call us gut-eaters and savages and such for christ sake) but I think that the feds have re-started the problem by issuing the apology. If they'd have left it alone then all us gut-eaters could just sit back and know that no justice will ever come of the massacres. Nobody will be posthumously tried for crimes against humanity, nobody will have to pay the piper period. That being the case, the apology is even more empty and demonstrative of a nation that doesn't care about its own.
Indians surrendered and said ok to the whole 1-America thing... but there's still 2 Americas and that's the problem. I won't be satisfied until Uncle Sam returns indian lands to indian control (we'll limit the return to current reservation lands) and recognizes all the tribes still represented by even one half blood member(must be documentable of course). I'd like to not pay taxes but that's just voting myself a share of public money because my great grandpa was murdered and that never really makes sense.

put things in perspective, indians got a better deal than most.
Sucks about the mineral rights, sucks about the lands being shitty and all, but at what point do people decide to move forward rather than fight backwards?
at least indians got to keep thier hertiage. i dont even know what it is like to really have a heritage cause im white so that means my heritage is not worth teaching ot discussing in school unless it is something that my ancestors did that was horrible.
lol

things have changed irreversibly.
just about every culture experiences this eventually
sometimes it is best to adapt and move forward

my feeling is this on the reparation issue...if this country is gonna stand behind givin everything under the sun to jews cause of the "holocaust", then fair is fair...give it to blacks cause of slavery, give it to japs cause of the ww2 detention camps, give it to the irish because of that whole "no irish need apply era" but but but i do not see where you owe anything to indians who mostly WILLINGLY gave their land away....thats the big diff i see...if i sell my 1988 stang for 3000 bucks and the next year it becomes a classic and its now worth 50000 bucks, can i go to the guy who bought it and say to him "you owe me 47000 dollars more now?" no treaties were signed with jews, no treaties were signed with slaves, no treaties were signed with innocent jap prisoners. treaties were signed with indians....thats the diff....they made a bad deal...end of story
and yes indians were killed and raped and robbed...but so were white people back then

my argument is that the whole reservation system is still taking advantage of tribes. get government out of tribal affairs, treat it like a church or a club or whatever but at least give the land back, give the money back and take down the BIA.
