Default Sumitomos Vs. Snow.

Wow.

So i knew sumotomos were bad in cold weather, i assumed they were bad in snow, but i wasnt prepared for how bad.

Last night my friend Jen wanted to get a beer with me, so i told the wife i was gonnna go grab a beer or two and would be late. (lol she rocks)

I get to the bar, it is about 1/2 mile drive from my house. I was driving the stang cause it was somewhat nice out.

Im in the bar, on my 3rd beer and my wife calls me, "Hey, it is snowing u conna be able to make it home?" i said yeah sure. it just started, i have enough time to finish my beer and head home.

So, i go outside for a smoke, and HOLY CRAP there was 1/2 inch of snow on the ground and street, the thick heavy wet **** that makes it real slick.

And there i am with a 4:10'd Mustang GT with sumitomo 315's summer tires.

FACK!

So i go pay for my beers and jump in the stang, almost spin out going 5 mph through the parking lot. Hooked a right and almsot spun out again, drove up a very very easy incline and would start fishtailing if i exceeded 10mph. Stopped at the light.
Light turned green, wheels were spinning. Car SLOWLY starts inching forward, bit by bit im going as easy as i can, start making my left turn and almost spun out! light was turning yellow... then red... and im still turning through the intersection.

ok, got the turn made, i got about 100 feet of flat road before a long uphill climb, i manage to get to 10mph, 12...13.. spinning... 12.......13.......14.... spinning.....13................14................. .............15.... spinning.............16mph...........17mph....
and started up the hill. Not a drastic hill either by any measure.

start going up, try to add gas, fishtailing! still goint 15mph... getting futher, fishtail! doing 9mph.... still going,,, i am almost there, FISHTAIL... DAMMIT,. probablt 3-4mph and 10 feet of hill left, add gas, FISHTAIL!, ahhhhhhhhhhh shiiiiiiiitttttttttt BAM YES! Top of the hill THANK GOD.

so, i slowly start gaining speed, fishtailing every 4-5 seconds if i add ANY gas, im in Drive just letting the car start to go. Hit the next light.

Turns green. Start spinning, ease off, let the car start to pull itself, starting to pull, lightly tap gas FISHTAIL!, let off, easy, easy... light turns yellow..... red.... im still halfway through the intersection at a freaking snails pace. I finally get through and build up to 11-12mph, fishtaling here and there. 100 feet up is the Left turn into the nieghborhood... make the turn, nice and easy, nice and easy, ok, made it. Hit a T intersection, turn right, moving 2-3 MPh... try to go faster FISHTAIL!!!!... so on and so forth untill i get to my cul-de-sac, im parked on the very end.

CRAP< honda is in driveway. Stop mustang about 30 yards from driveway aimed right at the garage. Get out, run to honda, backed honda up, moved to street. honda has awesome grip! ****** stang. lol.

I get back in mustang start up, trying to get moving start before i hit the driveway, i get about 6-7mph. i get in the driveway, get haalfway up and run out of speed, nose starts sliding left towards my saturn. FAK!
ok
put in reverse, backed up and used the momentum to get me about 150 yards back from my driveway. So i get in and PUNCH IT, 1mph...2.....3......4.....5.... i hit maybe 15mph, hit the driveway, and just BARELY get it in the garage.

So yah... To say SUMITOMOS and SNOW suck, is a serious understatement.

My honda can romp through a FOOT of snow like it is summertime, however, that stang with the tires can BARELY treck 1/2 mile with 1/2 inch of snow on the ground.

it took me damn near 20 min to drive 1/2 mile. Several times i diddnt think i would make it home.

Oh yah, my stang does not have T/c. might be easier with T/c.

I know the feeling! It snowed...well more like ice storms with a little mixed precipitation... a few times while I lived in Ga and did not have snow tires. Sumis and snow are ****, pure poop. not surprised.

Dude, my car is hard to drive with my Dunlop Winter Sports on! if I didn't have the cobra brakes up front I would have put my 16's on with 225 width snow tires, then it would be maybe a tiny bit better. I dunno if having a 5sp with TC helps me or not...it would be easy to burn out the rear brakes with that TC ABS'ing the **** out if them constantly if it got really bad out. Having a stiffer clutch sucks in snow....no real easy engagement...too "on/off" fun in th dry though

Mustangs suck in snow. right tires help a little, but Mustangs suck in the snow. and rain.

but they are so damn fun when its warm and dry out! I dont mind the winter driving challenge too much, its enough to know that spring is around the corner and back to when Mustangs are fun.

Haha one time it snowed 2 inches while I was at work and I couldn't even back out of my parking space.

And just so you know, TC would've just cut power as soon as it sensed wheelspin, so the only way you would've got home with it is if you turned it off. Mustang TC is a joke.

ya, summer tires and snow really suck. I have Blizzak snow tires on mine for the winter, and they work great. Goes through 6" of snow like nothing.
