Default Another Insuance Thread....USAA

For some of us, we have the option to use USAA for insurance. I will warn you.....as some of you will be very pissed when you see these rates. So, if you are paying through the roof, you may not want to read this thread.

For 24 years I have been with State Farm. But, I just switched a few weeks ago to USAA. I have full coverage, $500 deductable, $300k/$500k limits....towing, uninsured motorist.....the whole ball of wax. Nothing cheap.

All three cars now cost about $1200 per year. But, actually a little less, because the Mustang carries only comprehensive 6 months a year or so.

I am insuring:

2003 Saab 9-3
2007 Pacifica AWD Limited
2000 Mustang GT Vert

My rates dropped by about $1500 per year by dumping State Farm.

The house is currently staying with State Farm and they will penalize me by about $150 per year now for dumping auto with them.

I may actually put the Mustang Back with State Farm since most of the savings came from the other two cars and then I get my $150 back.

Yeah, USAA's rates are pretty much unbeatable.
And they don't hassle you over claims over like some companies. My wife lost some earring a while back that were covered under our personal property plan. After a quick 5 minute phone call to USAA, they direct deposited the original amount of the earrings to me within 2-3 days.
Their credit card was also recently rated by Consumer Reports as the # 1 credit card. Lowest rates and best costumer service.

Funny thing is that I have gotten quotes from them many times in the past, but there was never really that much savings. $1500 is a lot of money to save just by switching services.

I do a lot of banking and investments with them as well. I also have had car loans with them, but none now. My kids have investment accounts with them too and USAA claims that those facts weigh-in when they calculated my rates.

My brother uses USAA and always speaks highly of them as well.

I still have to figure out what to do with both my houses (one in WI and one in CT) and my umbrella policy. USAA's quote on the house in CT was WAY too high for some reason. I need to talk to them next week. It is a rental and I think that made them nervous when comming up with the quote.

Insurance is such a game. But if you happen to be a member, definately check out their auto rates. If you are lucky enough to be able to use, congrats.

Indiana Farm Bureau rocks. I pay like $1600 a year for 3 cars and the house. The old dodge truck is the only one with P&L. The nova is collector car and has $15000 on it. Cobra is full coverage.$500 deductable on all but the nova, its $100.

www.usaa.com

But, you have to be an officer in the military or be a child of a military officer. They may have opened up to enlisted personnel but I am not sure. With your age and tickets, that may also be a problem too. But, check with them. Who knows.

Car must be payed for and have liability insurance.. Either that or you have had some serious strings pulled ie: you're not the primary insured on the policy..

Ill be 21 in Feb. and I work for Farmers Insurance Group. My insurance for a '96 Cobra is looking to be about $200/mo for full coverage and I have absolutely nothing on my record at all. Ofcourse I won't be paying that because I will pull my own strings, but $49/mo for a high risk driver (especially male) is impossible without some major manipulation.

Do you have any other insurance with us? Fire, Life, health? With Farmers, the more insurance you get, the better less your premium will be. Like, with a "fire" (home owners/ renters) policy added to an auto policy will save you 18% on your auto. Not to mention that if you're 21 you will qualify for Farmers 30/60 insurance (only used to be available to 25+y/o) then at 25 you may qualify for Super or Ultra preferred.

There are alot of tricks that your agent can use to save you alot of money, ofcourse that all depends on the legal limitations of liability for your state and what kind of coverages you want/ need.

Farmers is actually getting more and more competitive, especially since we have acquired several companies recently like Bristol West to write auto policies. If you feel like you're paying too much, get with your agent and see what's up, but by all means don't ever lower your limits of liability because that can be your life line incase of an accident.

Yeah its something about an umbrella policy or something. Not too sure on all that, but I get a discount cause i took a course and my grades help out quite a bit. And believe it or not convertibles cost less than coupes a month... Or so I was told would have been 51 a month with a coupe hehe go figure

That means that your 'rents have got some pretty serious moolah. Umbrella policies usually won't give you a great discount, but if I had to guess I'd say that your parents own atleast one house, several cars and have atleast one substantial life insurance policy. Also, like I said before either your car is already payed for and just has liability or you are not listed on the Mustang ie: as long as you're still in the same household as your parents you can drive any of the cars in the household and still get the same coverage.. The insurance for my '98 (V6) was about $50/mo with liability and a little bit of Comp and glass/ towing.

My only advice is for you to keep doing what you're doing, tickets (even minor citations) will more than double insurance for anyone under 25 and will nearly double it for anyone over 25.

How do you figure? It's actually quite the opposite, especially when you give someone the right coverage and they go out and do something stupid and don't have to pay $$$$$ out of their pocket.

For instance:
My dad recently got one of his clients to get a $1,000,000 'umbrella' policy.. About a month later his 17y/o daughter was in a major at fault accident that ended up costing $750,000. Had the guy not gotten the umbrella he would have had to pay about $500,000 out of his pocket because his max auto liability was $250,000.

Would you hate your insurance agent if that happened to you?
