Default Cash back on a trade in?

I haven't bought many cars from dealerships and I've always wondered..If I were to trade in a vehicle (no I'm not trading my WRX), and the vehicle I was trading FOR had a value less than the vehicle I was trading, do dealerships give cash back? For example; If I were trading a $13,000 car for a $12,000 car, would I get a $1000 check? How does that work?

thanks in advance

Yeah, thats about right. Although with only a grand difference that money would go into Taxes, Tags, and Title, and leave you with very little leftover.

they would find some way to screw you over so you get nothing back.

We had some rich old guy at work trade an srt10 viper with 6000m for a base model c6 vert. Considering the gap was so big, we did end up giving him some money back. Its rare that it happens though

yep. no one wants to buy the damn thing. So i figured I trade it in for an equal or lesser value car, with an extremely high resale value.

it will never happen...no dealer will ever allow cash back by the time they are done screwin you over...they'll buy your car for 4 grand and you'll see it for sale on their lot in a week for 12 grand
