I didn't read everyones reply but heres my imput on it.
Im no where near 30ish yet, but I have been training for about 4 years now.
Personally I dont like the bowflex because its cables, cables is like free weights, need a lot of focus to just keep the straight and such. I mean they are great, but i cant imagine doing all my work outs with just cables. Personally for the price I would join a large gym, something like an LA Fitness or Bally's if you have it in your area. I started working out with buying workout stuff from a sports authority but i didn't really start seeing results till i started a real gym. Its just the motivation from the gym and the knowleadge you learn from other people. Everyday I go i meet new people learn new work out stuff, have people help me out, etc etc etc. But then again this is just me.
As for supplements, it all depends on the person, I use to take NO xplode, its great for gaining muscle quickly, but to me it retains too much water and gives me a bloated feeling. Now a days im really dedicated into that whole "Lean ripped" look, I take a type of steroid called winstrol, but thats a whole different ball park from what you want to do and wouldn't really recommend it at all for you.
But back on subject, id go to a gym. you'll get bored working out alone at home after a while and if you have never taken weight training and you dont know what your doing then you can end up just hurting yourself more by doing inproper workouts.
