Yes they would give you a power increase, but would do gears first if it was me. :icon_thum

15hp is a good guess. and well worth it for the cheap price you can get them for.

for the same price of a cold air kit and pulleys youd feel a bigger difference with gears

show me where you can get gears installed with a tuner so your speedo works for less than a cold air kit and pulleys......

Default 04 3.07 gears

Your 04 has real tall gears (3.07's, I think - my 02 has 3.27's). A set of 3.73's or 4.10's (use the 4.10's if you plan track action or serious street events) will yield greater elapsed time gains than any other mod. They also cost considerably more than a cai and pulleys (about $750 installed vs about $450). My suggestion for mods would be:

1. 3.73 or 4.10 gears

2. Diablo Predator or SCT X-Calibrator tuner (premium fuel tune and reset speedo for new gears, etc.)

3. Bassani or other good after cat (for the motor music, plus a few more hp)

4. Bassani X-pipe

5. Accufab 70mm tb & intake plenum combo (I have C&L)

6. DeMolet tuneable inducition CAI

7. Steeda G-Trac kit (springs, cc plates, strut brace)

8. Steeda Tri-Ax shifter

9. Steeda underdrive pulley set (only if you never plan to add supercharger)

10. Head games, ie, Comp 270 cams, ported heads (5 angle cnc - fox lake will do it for $750 plus shipping)

11. Dyno time - plan on spending about $300+ to get the new combo perfect

couldn't you just fab a cold air intake? use like some pvc pipe and a kn filter? dosen't look that complex. plus wouldn't the pvc be better than all those chrome kits since metal will take in the heat more easily? also you could possibly shorten the angle of the elbow's to increase air flow? or even set up a ram air type set up. have to figure a good air flow patteren 1st but this seems possible.....

The mass air unit is sensitive to certain types of turbulence. This is reason some early CAI's messed with idle and mixture. Still added a few ponies over the miserable (but quiet) oem unit...

Many new units (DeMolet Tuneable Induction and K&N) for instance use abs plastic which adds little bling but does not retain heat. In general terms, all units are likely to add some hp, but I think DeMolet and K&N have the right idea. Their units use gentle angles and good engineering thoroughly tested.

For $130 shipped, why build your own unless you just want to experiment?

Pullies 5 hp, K & N filter drop in 5hp, cold air kits are just for looks and some mess up the m.a.f.
As far as gears go plan on spending 250 - 350 for install and 185 for gears and install kit ( bearing, crush sleeve etc.).

the cold air kits bring cooler air from outside the engine compartment. the colder the air the more dense it is. with the normal air box in the car it pulls in the heated air from around the motor.

Default Tripleblack hit the nail on the thread!

I went w/ a CAI first, but got no real seat-of-the-pants noticeable difference. The gears however are awesome. Nothing like throwing one of your buddies in the backseat! :happy6: It is the best mod I've done-- a close second being my x pipe which sounds awesome. Stick to your budget, but if I were you I would save up more and get gears first!

My thing is the gas mileage and price of gas. of course today it was 2.13 for premium so it wasn't that bad.

Default Cobra $

Cobra units do run higher (lower market base I guess). Still I have seen some under $200 ($179 springs to mind for some reason).

You might check out the UPR package deals for cobras.

In the www.allfordmustangs.com tech section they have a cool spot where you can dial in your gearing and they'll tell you your rpm at speed (ie, 2200rpm with 3.73 gears at 75mph, for instance). If you check your rpm's at a speed you run a lot, you'll get some idea of what the new gearing will do.

I get reports of 3.73 gears changing GT mileage by 1 mpg, and 4.10's a bit more (2 or so). A great deal depends on the type of driving you do. Highway mileage will suffer the LEAST, whereas stop and go mixed with a few blasts through traffic will suffer the MOST (fuel consumption in the lower gears is far greater than higher gears, of course, etc.).

Cheaper than that in Georgia - I just paid 2.09 for premium at the local Sams club - in general, some of the sourthern states (like Kentucky) have low taxes on gas. Most folks don't know how much of the $2 a gallon is tax - in some states, counting everything, almost half.

It's one of the few commodities treated this way - like tobacco. Guess somebody thinks gas is a "sin".
