Computer guys, Get in here.
Hey folks.
Jack is finally going to leave the stone age and buy a computer. (i havent owned one in about 7 years)
I got 1k to spend, will probably go with Dell cause my bro is a project manager and gets a 10% off wholesale price.
Now, i used to be a pro back in the 286/386 days, i know im dating myself there.
so, any help on what i should look for?
WHAT I WANT OUT OF MY PC.
I want all my CD's on there of course. My gaming will be done on my Xbox 360. I want to be able to do photoshop stuff, and video editing. also basic stuff like accounting and stuff. So. help me out here.
FIRST OFF, is this ****er any good? 999 msrp, ill get it for probably under 800.
Dell XPS 410
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6300 (2MB L2 Cache,1.86GHz,1066 FSB)
Windows Vista
256mb nVidia Geforce 7300le turbocache
1gig dial channel DDR2 SDRAM
250gb HD
19in flat panel monitor.
That aside, what should i look for in desktops?
PROCESSORS
what processors should i aim for (and why), which to avoid (and why)
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6300 (2MB L2 Cache,1.86GHz,1066 FSB)
or
Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 524 (3.06GHz, 533FSB)
or
AMD Athlon™ 64 3200+
Also graphics cards.
Which is better?
Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3000
or
256MB nVidia Geforce 7300LE TurboCache4
im really out of the loop here. what is better 2 1.8gz processors or a single 4gz processor?
basically i got about 1k to spend for computer/monitor/keyboard/mouse.
i want to get a decent one.
any help ideas?
and NO LAPTOPS, i dont give a **** if i can use it on my coffee table, i want a desktop.
Ohyah, and what can the XBOX360 do with a home PC? how well do they interact?
thanks!

first off... avoid vista. youll want to have windows xp media center if you want to interact with your xbox. basically youll have to allow everything vista does because of its "security" features. i know you like hi-fi home entertainment so you can forget hooking up your home theater setup to the computer if you have vista because it wont recognize it. again... stay with XP media center.
photoshop doesnt take much to run. youll be fine with anything you get to run photoshop. with video editing, youll want a good videocard like that nvidia and lots of ram. youll need hd space if you want to hold videos and music, and 250gb is more than enough for the normal user. ive got 500gb and im nowhere near filling it up and ive got over 300 albums on the computer.
ive always been an AMD fan, so id chose that, or just the fast intel. you wont need dual processors unless you do serious multitasking like transfering huge files from HD to HD, video editing, running photoshop, ect..

just my , but if you have a grand to spend you could build yourself a wicked pc that would would list for around $1500-$1800. best of all, its what you want in it. check out newegg.com they have every component you would need, plus building a pc is not really that hard. as far as brands go i'm an AMD and Nividia guy myself, biggest thing is get as much RAM as you can fit and a good sized hard drive. also if you go the self-build route dont skimp on the power supply get a top quality one, i have a volcano by raidmax and it comes with detachable "danglies" as i call them. so i can configure my power supply for things i need it for and dont plug in cords for stuff i dont need or have installed. one more thing, and perhaps the most over looked is cooling, the more fans the cooler it runs and the cooler it runs the better it runs. many factory pc's are made to be quite and the expense of cooling so if you can add fans....do it.

Stay away from Windows Vista for the time being.. requires way too many resources, as too many holes, ***** going to go wrong with it for about a year, like every other microsoft thing that comes out..after a year, the bugs will hopefully be fixed.
As for graphics cards...
nVidia Geforce or ATI Raedon is the way to go..
Processors: Intel Core Duo.. Intel didn't get their **** together till then. AMD is good, but right now, they aren't putting up much competition against Intel
Dell is good for a factory computer but if I were you, I'd have your own built..
I gave myself a rough estimate for a decent computer for me to build..it was around $800.. however this was before the Dual Processors came out.
RAM: if you go with Vista, I'd probably get like 2 gigs of ram
Hard Drive: 80 gigs isn't bad, depending on what you want.
