PC/Xbox live help/suggestions please! much appreciated-computer guys, need your help!
Ok, so i bought a PCI (ethernet) card for the back of my computer so i dont have to use a wireless router to connect to xbox live. I put the card in the back of my comp, installed it, plugged the ethernet cable into the slot, and connected it to my xbox. checked connections, and when the xbox is on it says Enabled, and when its off it says network cable unplugged. So i know the comp knows there's a connection. But for some freakin reason i cant connect to xbox live, no connection is registered on the xbox's part all..how do i connect to xbox live? i really dont like transmitting to everyone around me what im looking at on the internet (bank accounts, ****, online orders, etc.) and i really dotn want to buy a 50 dollar modem with extra ethernet slots. any help is MUCH appreciaed, even reffering me to a website or something like that would be awesome...thanks in advance

Yeah, I mean you're most likely going to have to dig into the directory to make it work which (unless you know what your doing) is a nono and will be a PITA.
It will be way easier to just spend a few more $$ on a decent wireless router. You can get a good Linksys for like less than $40.

you need to set up internet connection sharing on your PC. Right now you've nailed access to your PC from your Xbox but you've done nothing to enable communications beyond that. Google the how-to for setup of Windows Internet Connection Sharing and pray for the best.
FWIW... the optimal configuration is to have both your Xbox and your windows system passing all their web transactions directly through the router/firewall. Allowing it to go through your PC is kinda like using 2 envelopes to mail a letter...it's just extra packaging of the information and a lot more work to get it in the mail.

It's actually not that hard, as r3dn3ck said all you have to do is enable internet sharing on your computer, which is as simple as going into the control panel and clicking a couple of buttons. Unfortunately though, I'm a mac guy so I couldn't give you a step by step of how to do it in XP, but I know it can be done, even done it myself.

you cant do it, period. after ALOT of messing around with sharing connections, bridging, doing research, etc. xbox/xbox live wont work with the same modem, no matter what, a router is need...
thanks for the help though...i guess ill just keep broadcasting all my private info i unscrewed the antennas on the router, that will porbably help with the range

And just so you know, if you're just using a regular G router and you have it encrypted, you're pretty safe unless you have neighbors that are out to get you. It would be very hard for the average Joe to connect to your network if it's protected with WPA2 and even if they did, it's not like they see exactly what your computer is showing. Remember, your router does the broadcasting, not your computer.

I promise that you can do it. When you share your internet connection in XP, it acts as a DHCP server and distributes local IP addresses. The problem you encountered was probably that your were doing it twice, once in your wireless router and again through your PC, making it virtually impossible for your XBOX to be seen by people outside your LAN.

Do you have a link to somewhere that says that? Because I don't buy it. Networking protocol is networking protocol. Microsoft can't build something into the XBOX's network interface that says "don't allow connections through a PC" because the XBOX can't know the difference. All your PC is doing when you share internet from one connection to another is acting as a router.

Actually it will work, but it doesn't matter, he's got it set up now so I'll just leave this alone.

The only thing that may work between the Xbox rj45 port to your pc rj45 port is to get a crossover network(ethernet) cable. A standard network cable with not work. You will have to plug your modem using usb so that both can have access to the net.
