Window's Vista... Chime in!
Anybody upgrade their PC's or laptops to the new Vista yet??
I'm seriously thinking about getting the Home Premium update version.
Any thoughts on Vista from first hand experience from the officially released versions??? My friend has tried it on a 1, 2, and 3 gb of RAM computer and said it was really nice on the larger RAMs.

If you install it now you will still get the service packs. The service packs are part of those updates you get periodically get. Just because you install Vista now, doesn't mean you can't get the future service packs, so it makes no sense to wait if you want to get it

windows copies all sorts of mac stuff, especially when they first started competing...

I think I hear a couple of Mac humpers in here........
I don't plan on getting Vista just yet. Prob going to give them about 6 months to work any of the normal bugs out then ill be all over it. I can't wait to get it though, im hoping it can really unleash the power of the 64bit processor.

When people keep saying they are waiting for the bugs to get out, if you get Vista now, and updates come out, they should work out any bugs right?
What I mean is like if I got Vista now and there is bugs, any updates that come along should work out these bugs? So if say WNRacing got Vista in 6 months, and I have the most current updates when he buys it in 6 months, we should have the exact same thing?
I just want to be sure because I may go out and purchase it tonight. How do you tell if you run 32 or 64 bit processor?

I spent a good amount of money on my HP laptop and I love it, and I'm looking to really bring out it's full potential.

Go to:
Start ->
Control Panel ->
System.
And it should tell you what you are running. See image for example (My PC.)
And Yes, if you buy Vista now you will get the Same updates as I would have in Six months, but from my experiences with Windows O.S. it is always better to wait for a couple of months, atleast until the first Service Pack. If you go to cNet.com or G4TV they will tell you the same thing..

Well, I caved in and bought it tonight. After reading over a hundred personal reviews I realized people either absolutely hated it or loved it, NO in between. No offense to anyone, but the ones who said they hated it were really picking it apart it seemed and I really had no idea what they were talking about. Anyways, it took exactly 90 minutes to install. Didn't lose one single file in the upgrade process which was great. Simply put in the CD, clicked install, and then clicked "Upgrade." Didn't have to touch it again for 80 min, and then I just had to say "ok" twice to the time zones and date. Left it alone for another 10 min. and it was good to go.
The only problem I ran into was that it tried to run a different graphic card/driver that I don't have or something. It was odd, because after I fixed the resolution and stuff, all the font and taskbars were fine and the correct size. However the screen was stretched from left to right and the desktop icons were a little large. Since I have an HP, it came with this very useful recovery thing for drivers and disc recovery. So I pulled up the start menu and re-installed my NVidia graphic driver. Re-booted, fixed the resolution again but this time wtih the NVidia card and I'm perfect.
Been on it for about 30 min. so far and has some pretty neat features. Nothing too special for me, but I know I was going to buy Vista eventually so I might as well get it now. I figure when the updates do come out, I'll have them immediately so everything should be good!

as most of you know.. I work in a major electronic retailer and have been going through hell. Customers come in looking to buy new computers.. guess what, the software you wanna run isn't supported. We've been finding work arounds just to make half the antivirus/antispyware software work with Vista, which it's got a lot easier now.
I wouldn't dare put it on my desktop here at home, I run 2 GeForce 7800 GT OC's in SLi.. and since nvidia hasn't released a driver to support SLi with the 7xxx series in Vista yet, I think I'll keep the use of both video cards and stick with XP

I have GeForce Go 7400. I don't know much about computers, but when first had Vista running, my display was weird even after I adjusted the resolutions.
I then re-installed my Nvidia graphics driver, re-booted, re-adjusted resolutions and it was good.
I also ran into a sound issue the next morning, but messed around with that a little and now it all works just fine.

Or you guys could just buy a mac (apple) and not worry about service packs. Not to mention, they don't freeze up. Most, not all, viruses are based on and made to affect pc's so the threat of viruses is no where near as great. No ctrl-alt-delete all the time. You don't have 3 gb worth of useless crap running in a startup bar taking up all your RAM. No wireless usb sensors needed (has built in bluetooth module). It just takes some time getting use to the running environment. Try one sometime, you might not go back, I know I won't. Not saying pc's are crap, but I've only had one decent running one out of 6 or 7 and I paid top dollar for all my pc's. I was so frustrated i had to try something new, plus I am a graphic artist, which I need a apple for anyway...
