Default Need a little computer advice/help... networking to be exact

First off, I have a pretty much new HP DV6000 laptop. Has all the wireless stuff already, blah blah blah.

I'm seriously looking into an apartment and found one I like. They offer Hi-speed internet, basic cable, phone through the complex, so it's all received as one bill. More than likely I'm going to be doing this for I save just a couple dollars over Time Warner's bundle, but it's nice that it's all one bill.

Questions:
1.) Can I receive wireless in my apartment without having a main computer, such as a desktop. For instance, can I just run the cable into the Hi-Speed cable modem, and then from that into the wireless modem, and pretty much be done. My friend says he thinks this is possible, but I just need to physically hook up my laptop first to the cable modem when setting it up. This would act as the main computer, and then I can un-hook once it's set up.

2.) Is there such a device where the wireless modem AND the cable modem are all modem??? Where I wouldn't need a cable and a wireless modem.

Any thoughts, suggestions? Feel free.

1.) Yes you can. I have a desktop and laptop but when I first hooked up my wireless router, I didn't have the desktop hooked up to it at first. My laptop took to it with no problem. I can't remember though, if I wired my laptop to the router first or not. I think it says to but I'm pretty sure I didn't.

2.) Yes there is. I happened to see it at Best Buy. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1069299031125 I'm pretty sure that's the one I saw.

go grab yourself a linksys wrt54g wireless broadband router. your cable modem plugs into the uplink port on the router and then sends the signal to the clients on the router. it also has 4(i think) wired ports if you have non-wireless devices. its an awesome router for the price. i always get 100% signal on all my devices anywhere in my house with the router in my basement.

I'm gonna get that all in one modem posted above. I too saw it at Best Buy but just wanted to make sure it would work. It'll be nice just having one modem and not having all these wires everywhere.

linksys is quality stuff, some ISPs require you to use the modems they provide so id check into that before you go out and buy it. but as far as linksys/wireless goes, its a good match.

Well I found out some more. The basic package that the apartments offer is $32 for 59 channels and they are mailing me the list.

I think I'm going to go with this and then they're hi speed cable internet for $40.

The other thing you might wana consider is the type of usage your internet is guna get. I play 360 and lots of online computer games so I want the fastest connection possible. Cable is generally fast, but if it's being split to a building I see alota slower times, DSL can be good if you have the highest speed service around, because no matter what you will always transmit at the same rate. In other words, ask someone in the building how their internet is, and if you know someone you can do a ping test on their internet

go to command prompt and type in: ping -t www.google.com (or any other website you wana test, google andyahoo are generally best because they are high volume) if you have xbox text your connection to xbox live and you'll get an acurate reading... but yeah, not to go over your head or anything, i'm just an avid gamer...
