Default Driving a auto w/ the 3 speed

Hey, I was just wondering by turning overdrive off on a automatic mustang and using 1,2,and D would it benifit at all? Or on the reverse side would it hurt the engine at all? Thanks

No benefits in normal driving unless you like wasting gas. However, it would be wise to shut it off when racing, street or track.

yeah their is no added benifit, unless you consider adding additional wear to your tranny a benifit.

it stops it from going into 4th at WOT which is very bad for it.

Dunno about you but the response on my car is twice as good when I have OD off than when it is on.

So are you guys saying to drive in 1, then 2, and then D? Like shifting or something?

I've never used the 1 or 2 on my car.

Ok let me say this again,

In the 1/4 mile it does nothing....

You don't reach 4th gear in the 1/4 with an auto... ****, at 100mph your at like 3.5K in 3rd

and when upshifting at WOT, it shifts at the same point with O/D on or off

Stock yes, modded no. With 4.10s, I was hitting the rev limiter about 200' short of the 1/4 mile. If I had the OD on, my auto would've shifted at 6000rpm on WOT = NOT good.

overdrive is a crusing band, it was never designed to hold alot of power. it doesnt have the capacity to do that.

It sounds like people are saying it's bad to shift into 4th at WOT with O/D OFF........

o/d is 4th you cant shift into 4th with o/d off lol?

Basicly 4th gear is not made for WOT that means going into it at wot and being in it at WOT. Even modded AODE's cant handle it, some people try to tell you that you can but its untrue of the AODE.

I think we're confused, at least i am lol.

I thought someone said it was bad to shift into 4th at WOT with O/D.
How would this be any different than shifting into 2nd or 3rd at WOT.

I know that when it's turned off, your virtually eliminating 4th gear.

like i said 4th gear (also know as o/d in your car) isnt made to withstand WOT upshifts and holding power at WOT. So just dont do it.

So, when I'm driving with OD off, and then turn it on - it just shifts to 4th gear and stays there? Just wondering as when I drive with OD on, it still shifts so I don't really understand why OD is just 4th gear if it shifts through all of them anway.

all you do when you press the O/D off botton is turn off 4th gear thats it. It still shifts the same just doesnt allow you to go into 4th gear. WHen you turn it back on it will then use 4th when it can.

when overdrive is off you are limited to gears 1-3. If you turn overdive back on it will shift back into 4th which won't hurt it. It's shifting into 4th at full throttle that hurts it. Your car can go 110 in 4th because you've built up to that speed, but try to make it shift with your foot on the floor and it'll mess it up.

I believe thats what spike was trying to say, only he used less words.

An auto is an auto . . . just learn to drive stick!
