Driving a auto w/ the 3 speed
Hey, I was just wondering by turning overdrive off on a automatic mustang and using 1,2,and D would it benifit at all? Or on the reverse side would it hurt the engine at all? Thanks

No benefits in normal driving unless you like wasting gas. However, it would be wise to shut it off when racing, street or track.
|
actually...i have been testing my gas milage lately and i have done multiple tanks on just driving the auto normally and i get around 200 to 210 a tank, i have a six, and i now have been on this tank testing doung 1, 2, D with overdrive still on and right now am gettin 135miles to the half tank...so far i am gettin better gas milage doing 1, 2, D with o/d on
|
I use to do that a lot on my auto and started getting tranny problems after a while, its not worth it man. Save yourself the damage money and with that money buy yourself a tuner to shift your car perfectlly
|
i have the tuner shift points already...and get ****ty gas milage
i dont really care if the tranny blows up...just gives me a reason to swap in a stick on a warranty if i still have one |

yeah their is no added benifit, unless you consider adding additional wear to your tranny a benifit.

OD off at the 1/4 does absolutely nothing

So are you guys saying to drive in 1, then 2, and then D? Like shifting or something?
I've never used the 1 or 2 on my car. |
Ok let me say this again,
In the 1/4 mile it does nothing.... You don't reach 4th gear in the 1/4 with an auto... ****, at 100mph your at like 3.5K in 3rd and when upshifting at WOT, it shifts at the same point with O/D on or off |

lol...when i push my car and step on it...the car is programmed to shift at 6k but i have a superchips custom chip
|
yea,.... why is it not good to shift at wot into 4th???
i too have sct tune for firmer shifts |

o/d is 4th you cant shift into 4th with o/d off lol?
Basicly 4th gear is not made for WOT that means going into it at wot and being in it at WOT. Even modded AODE's cant handle it, some people try to tell you that you can but its untrue of the AODE. |
I think we're confused, at least i am lol.
I thought someone said it was bad to shift into 4th at WOT with O/D. How would this be any different than shifting into 2nd or 3rd at WOT. I know that when it's turned off, your virtually eliminating 4th gear. |
like i said 4th gear (also know as o/d in your car) isnt made to withstand WOT upshifts and holding power at WOT. So just dont do it.
|
So, when I'm driving with OD off, and then turn it on - it just shifts to 4th gear and stays there? Just wondering as when I drive with OD on, it still shifts so I don't really understand why OD is just 4th gear if it shifts through all of them anway.
|
all you do when you press the O/D off botton is turn off 4th gear thats it. It still shifts the same just doesnt allow you to go into 4th gear. WHen you turn it back on it will then use 4th when it can.

wow...my car shifts to 4th all the time after 40 mph...and i have head it in 4th at like 110 and nothing has gone wrong
an auto is an auto...just drive it :closed: |
