Default Synchro Problems, Wouldnt Mind Suggestions

Ok after going to the track last night and finding out that I have more synchros than I thought shot, I want your opinion on whether or not it would be better to just drop the T-45 altogether and put in a TKO instead. From what I read before With the amount of power the Cobra engine puts out the T-45 just cannot keep up with the demand.

Why am I considering this. Here are my Synchros that are going bad: 2nd, 4th, 5th. Thats right, THREE Synchros.

Thoughts anyone?

A stock T-45 has more than enough to handle the power your cobra is putting down! You could go with a TKO if you have the money but i'm sure you could finda cheap replacement t-45 or 3650 for that matter.

the T-45 is a crappy tranny. if you plan to drag race it hard, get rid of it.

Welcome to the club. The T45 tranny just isn't very stout, it's certainly the weak link in these cars. Some people get lucky and don't experience problems with them, even at the track but those tend to shift a little conservatively. Powershifting these transmissions won't last long at all. Most people bend shift-forks...which is where an aftermarket shifter with positive stops can help to an extent.

From day 1 I hated this transmission...it just feels like the shifter is dragging through rocks when trying to engage a gear. Nothing smooth about it at all. Some Redline D4 ATF tranny fluid helped somewhat, especially with cold tranny temps.

If money is no object look into any number of transmissions.

G-Force T5
G-Force T56
Stock Cobra T-56
D&D Performance T-56
TKO 500/600

Anywhere from $1500-3000 depending on options etc. you choose. Just do alot of research on other forums and contact the suppliers to ask their opinion for your application. If you don't plan on going forced induction, or launching hard at the track (6500 rpm launchs with Slicks) then you may be able to get away with a rebuild kit, larger shift fork etc. and a Cryo-treated input shaft.

Good Luck.

Just remember that 96-98 Cobras share the same tranny as the 96-98 GTs just in case you can get one used for cheap.

Is your clutch properly adjusted with a firewall adjuster and an aftermarket quadrant?
