Clutch Chatter - Need New Clutch?

The cable is pretty loose but adjusting the firewall adjuster doesn't really tighten the cable up that much at all. I have the adjuster set so my clutch starts to engage at about 1/3 of the way up and is fully engaged by, let's say, 2/3 of the way up with an inch or so of free play in the top of the pedal. If I adjust the cable tension so that it is tight (I'm assuming it's too loose) my pedal engages damn near the top of the pedal travel, which I don't want.

I can't see the cable being too tight... any ideas?

Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but I still haven't fixed my problem.

I talked to the mechanic who installed the clutch in the first place, and he believes that the firewall adjuster caused the cable to compact the throwout bearing and this is therefore what is causing the noise. I hope that is not the case because I JUST had that fixed.

I was able to replicate the sound for the guy who does all my transmission work and he said that it is the throw-out bearing making noise. Should I just go with am OEM part? I'll most likely also be reinstalling the stock quadrant and firewall piece.

Aftermarket firewall and quadrant will not harm the TOB when used correctly. You must of just had it on to tight and it wore the TOB really fast. What TOB did you use a Ford one or something else?

I used the Ford Racing TOB included with the King Cobra clutch kit.

When you say I "had it on too tight" what actually are you referring to? I'm assuming you mean to say that I had the cable adjusted too tightly. I don't see how this is the case because my clutch is engaging about an inch or two from the bottom (we'll say 1/3 of the way up) and is fully engaged by about 2/3; I thought this was how the adjustment was supposed to be. No matter how tight I adjusted the firewall adjuster the plastic sheath over the clutch cable still had some play in it; it was not taunt up to the firewall adjuster at all. After I thought about this for a while, I decided that perhaps maybe I did have the adjuster set too tight. I'm assuming the cable slides freely within the plastic sheath it sits in so even if there is play in the plastic covering, the cable actually probably is pretty damn tight. Maybe I did have it too tight.

Having the adjuster turned all the way in (clockwise) would mean that the cable is tight, correct? I know the more you turn the adjuster in the closer to the floor the clutch grabs. For some reason I'm having a hard time grabbing my mind around this idea right now but as I turn the adjuster in to the firewall, does the cable get tighter or looser? I like the clutch engaging near the floor but perhaps I did have it too tight... :/
