Default taking a while to start

what would be a possible reason why the engine does not fire right up? seems like lately the car has to turn over a few times before it will fire up. spark plugs are fairly new(about a month ago, they are the old fashion copper ended). have not done anything else recently that would affect starting that i kow of. put a cold air intake on last weekend. do have a check engine light with a 1443 code which i believe has something to do with the purge system. it is a 96 3.8l.
