I just installed a new clutch in my 99 v6. I tested the car out, and it seems to work. The throwout bearing is 100 times better, and I also replaced the clutch fork and pivot stud because they were squeaking. The clutch feels very different. It catches a lot sooner, and it is very smooth when the clutch actually connects with the engine. The actual clutch pedal feels looser (it is easier to push down). I'm not really sure I like it, but I'm prolly just used to the way it was.

After driving it maybe 1/2 a mile, I could smell something burning. It wasn't too strong, but definately there. I'm hoping it is just because it is brand new... It is kind of a "clean burning" smell if that makes since. It isn't strong like from a fire, but it reminds me of steam or like slightly burnt cookies without the cookie smell. Hah that makes no since.

Anyone know if this is normal, maybe like the face of the clutch needs to get worn down a little or something? I did resurface my flywheel, and everything else seems fine.

Sounds like everything is OK, its normal to get a little smell for a short time. Drive it awhile and keep an eye on it. What clutch did you put in? (aftermarket performance or reman)

 

I bought a griptech clutch off ebay. It should be oem quality. The only bad thing that I thought of was... I used to have like 2-3 inches to let up before the clutch started to catch the engine. Now, it is almost as soon as I lift up my foot. So I thought maybe when I have the clutch pressed in, it is barely separated. However, the rpm's do not change, and nothing bad happens when I press the clutch in, so I think it really is disconnected.

Is there any way to adjust it so I can let up like 2-3 inches before it catches? I did that auto-adjusting thing where you just lift the clutch pedal towards the driver's seat.

Griptech, off eBay? I hope you're lucky because 99% of time, off brand stuff sold on eBay is crap.

 

I researched it before I bought it. They are reputable and have good quality parts.

 

You need to adjust the clutch with the stock setup all you do is have the car off and put it in first gear. Then pull up on the clutch with your foot under the pedal it wont go far but pull on it hard. Then press down slowly all the way to the floor. This will adjust the clutch and adjust to your driving style.

You might also consider getting a firewall clutch adjuster.
