I believe that the computer will take over if I try to take 1st or 2nd past redline but I have never tried and I don't plan to
Of all the auto cars I've driven (2 Mercury minivans, F150, F250, and Civic), only the F250 allowed me to do that. All the others, if I put it in 2, it would start off in 1, shift to 2, and stay in 2 until the engine blows or if I shift it to 3 or D.

I'm from Chicago too. I tried the sand bag crap with the stock goodyears for 1 month 3 years ago. It might have helped, but it certainly did not help enough. Once there was a few inches of snow on the ground I wasn't going anywhere. I got some used Bridgestone Blizzaks for $400 and threw them on because the weight in the trunk was just not helping me. With the snow tires you do not need any extra weight in the trunk. My car does fine in 6" of snow. The hardest part is getting in and out of an unshoveled parking spot. Last year I was doing 55mph on the highway in a blizzard when everyone was going 40mph. The car felt perfectly fine. Not once did I feel like I was going to loose control.

the extra weight in the trunk may help with traction while accelerating but when STOPPING, the tires (if youre not running snow tires) are going to slide.

i experienced this the night i first got my snow tires installed. i was on the way to get them installed and we had just got over a foot of snow that day and i had drag radials on. it was the first time i'd driven the car in snow so i wasn't sure how it handled. i went to stop extra soon at a light and i still almost hit a car in front of me because it couldnt get traction and slid. once i got the tires on that night i was flying through snow with no problems as long as you have proper throttle control. braking is 100x easier.

Guys, one thing to think about when putting stuff in the trunk for weight, that stuff could end up hitting you in the back of the head. Just be careful and make the right deceisons and watch out for the other 100000 idiots that aint watchiing you. Good Luck

Well there's your problem. If there's anything a Mustang owner should know and that is the stock Goodyear ZR17s suck, period. Doesn't matter if the ground is dry, wet, snowy, or icey, they suck. My Wide Ovals, which are a summer tire, does better in the snow than the old Goodyears. In fact, it's amazing that despite how much they suck, they are more expensive than the tires that outclass it.

The stang does it and it's saved me from sitting at an intersection many a time.

When there is snow on the grond I try to never go into 1st

Hmm, maybe I just never noticed before since the 150 had the 4R70W but it also had enough torque to over power to e-brake at idle while the 250 is a complete dog.

I rather be stuck in a rwd car w/ a posi than fwd and no posi. The posi has saved my *** too many times for me to even consider doing the snow w/o it. However, if your beater is a 4wd truck, ignore me.

I only had the car for 2 months back then so I had no idea about how the Goodyears sucked. I have had BFG KDW II's as my summer tires for 2 years now. When I hear that there will be at least an inch of accumulation, that is when I go throw on the snow tires. I got my 2 rear 255/40/17 BFG's for $50 less than stock Goodyear replacements would have cost me.

I would never go to a fwd car for the winter if I could help it. If you guys could see my driveway, there's not much but a 4wd vehicle that could make it up. Even then it's still a bitch.

it did a lot better than my Mustang, which has summer tires. my Mazda has Goodyear Viva 2's on it, and it did wonderful in the snow. it only slides when i slam on the brakes, or mash the throttle.

We can get anywhere between a nice little dusting of snow all of the way up to two feet here in town. We're on the border of the bad stuff, so we'll see.

T/C! Are you kidding! That sh^t is off all the time. I haven't used it in almost 3 years. It took me a few weeks of winter driving to figure out that t/c does not help at all. Should've had the tuner turn it over permanently last year when I got the car tuned.

X2. Ford made it so it would always kick in when you didn't want it and when you wanted, it would not kick in. In fact, because of TC, I got stuck on the smallest little hill 2 winters ago in which it took me an hour to go up it. Since TC kicked, I lost momentum and went sideways just enough to get out of the tracks and into slush. The limited slip is the only God sent anyone needs.

i actually left the TC on the other night. we got 5" of snow on the highway and they didnt plow any of it for rush hour. took me 6 hrs to get home. Anyway, going uphill+5" of snow/slush+rwd=fail. the traction control saved it. in that much snow, any blip of the throttle makes the rear end boogie with the trac control off, especially with the stupid v6 rear diff.

I guarantee you that backing off the throttle yourself when you start to feel it slipping is going to be better than letting Ford decide. You my friend got very lucky w/ TC.
