Default Water Pump

Been having a small leak for a couple weeks now. At first there was no visable sign from where it was leaking but after awile a brownish rust stain started to show on my water pump. I sanded it down and sure enough there was a crack. I put some Quick Steel Putty over the crack to help slow the leak.

Well i just spent my saturday morning replacing the water pump. The swap went pretty smoothly for the most part, only thing that was a pain in the *** was the fact i had to rent a special tool to remove/reinstall the power steering pully and removing the old gasket was also pretty damn annoying.

-Any ideas of what could have caused this crack?
-Possible factory defect?
-Is this common?
-Happen to any of you guys?

Anyways here are some pics of the crack:
