Default 94 5.0 vs 98 dohc

IF you were looking at a 94 cobra with the 5.0 or a 98 cobra with the 4.6 dohc what would you chose and why? Just curious what the pros and cons are of the two.

The 98 can be revved sky high so it's great for upper rpm racing. The old 5.0 though is great on the street due to much better low end grunt and the fact that if it breaks down, just about every auto place should have the part you need (never mind the aftermarket). My vote would be the 98 if you plan on doing a lot of auto x or road racing but for the 94 if you plan on having a nice street car.

i've got a 98 & i wouldn't change. sure, it's a little weak on the low end, but catches up very quickly. i have no complaints. after all, it's not who takes off the fastest, but who finishes the fastest.

since the 98 has less of a low end bounce to it, is that why it gets pretty decent mpg. I dunno what the 5.0s get for gas mileage

if you are worried about low end grunt slap some 4:10's or 4:30 gears in the 98 and you'll get to the power quicker. All N/A 4v stangs should come stock with 4:10's.

+ 1 for the 5.0. although they both have great potential. maybe the dohc 4.6 if you plan to whipple it. isnt the 4.6 lighter

+1 for the modular(but thats me)

The 5.0l would be lighter! The modular engines are jianormous compared to the old windsors.

BUT.!!!!

The DOHC cobra engine, if it were to be built, would only need better rods, forged pistons, ARP hardware and a balance then you would be set for 1000+ horses S/C or Nitrous.

Very big build potential these modulars have with stock parts.

The 5.0l would need at least new heads or a super port job with bigger valves and matching intake to compare to what the modular already has.

Despite the size, the 4.6 is lighter, especially the 4V. Remember, the 302 was all Iron while the 4.6 4V was all Aluminum.

In my humble opinion...the 5.0 is crap. A full bolt on 5.0 is good for less RWHP than the bone stock 4.6 in my 04 GT. Yeah sure you can build it for cheaper than a modular motor, but the modular design/technology is better and capable of much more power.Build the bottom end and improve the cams, intake and exaughst, you'll smoke any comprable pushrod 5.0 .But that is opinion and why they have MOD vs. Pushrod night at the local strip!

Problem is once you slap on Cleveland heads, you have heads that flow just as good (if not better) than the 4V heads on the Modulars, stock. Also, add a dedicated aftermarket to supply everything needed to make sick power, combine all that w/ the larger displacement and the 302 can make much more streetable power than a 4.6 4V. Problem for the 302 is the block can only take 500 rwhp tops and even w/ Cleveland heads, it won't rev as high as a 4.6. However, before the 302 reaches these limits, the 302 will smoke a 4.6 thanks to larger displacement and 2-valved heads that can flow as good as the Modular's 4-valved heads.
