Default 2nd gear scratch - Cobra - diagnosis guys?

Have a '96 Cobra & when driving normally it's fine but when i do a 1/4 mile run shifting from 1st to 2nd the gear scratches.Does this mean the synchronizer is gone? The car only has 23,000 miles on it so this seems rather odd. When gearing down from 3rd to 2nd its also fine so it's a puzzle.

I've heard of a problem in drag cars shifting at high rpm where the clutch is generating a vacuum force and keeping itself either totally or partially engaged regardless of the position of the clutch pedal. Could be similar, could be different. In any case most of those sorts of things should be taken care of by proper clutch adjustment. Have you ever replaced the clutch cable?

The cable has never been replaced but it may be a good inexpensive place to start because i really can't believe it's the gear synchroniser that early in the mileage of the car.

While at it, swap out the plastic quadrant for a nice Aluminum piece, such as the one from MM.

even the cheap upr setup will be better. it could very well be the synchros, did you buy the car new or used? no one said the origional owner didnt powershift the living hell out of it. atleast the t45 is easier to change then the 3650.

I bought the car used so it's quite possible the first owner damaged it.The best thing is probably just to go ahead & order the parts beforehand then have my mechanic rip it down to save downtime. Thanks!

If the problem is only at mega high RPM, let it drop 200 more and go from there. When my tranny was new it was reticent to go into pretty much any gear with the motor spinning over 5K. It's smooth as silk now.

In any case, keep us updated.
