Default Do you grind?

Wondering if its me, say I'm at 5,000 RPMs in second gear I try and shift into third and it just won't go in alot of the time. Some times it even grinds because of this. I end up hurting my arm trying to get it into gear. Is this because its spinning so fast that its hard to catch? I'm no expert.

Any advice?

Sounds to me like either your synchros are bad or your third gear is about to take a dump on you...

Pretty sure third gear isn't going to just die out of the blue?

However synchros might be the problem how do I go about fixing this?

This thread on another forum describes my problem perfectly: http://www.svtperformance.com/forums...=356845&page=2

what year car and trans?
chances are its an internal problem but there are a few things you can-do:1 change the fluid, maybe its low or needs changing and 2, dont slam it into 3rd gear. other than that, it might be time for a new clutch and trans

find someone experienced to drive it and diagnose it. then go from there. looks like it may be time for a tranny rebuild and a clutch.

well now thats just not gonna' happen, as your outta' options Hot Rod. now the 3650 has had its issues and the repair kit to fix your problem is @$1200.00 or you could get a new unit from D&D which would also be @$1200.00. so as I stated before, you can try and change the fluid and see if that helps and stop slamming it ito 3rd.

also of note, a worn-out clutch and pressure plate could be the problem, but those issues usally show-up in all gear changes, not just a 2/3 shift.

Alright thanks, another quick question any reason why it only happens at high rpms?

maybe, high rpm shift problems are mostly related to the clutch not dis-engaging quickly enough and again usally due to a pressure plate problem, clutch disc problem or both

See its weird, if i'm in 4th and I drop it into third to get more power(hehe) (its at high rpms) it goes in fine. Its just the high rpms from second to third. Do you still think its my tranny?

wait, in your origional post you said from second to third, now your saying from third to second, which is it?

my tremmec 3550 doesnt like to go 3-2, but thats because the tranny was abused before i got it. it also has to do with how the synchros work inside the tranny. 1-2 is on a common rail while 3-4 are on another. leaving 2-3 to be alittle differant and akward.

Sorry I mean second to third, and no I didn't adjust the clutch as it engages a bit in the middle where I want it to.

Default Try This

I have had the same problem you're having, I think.... 3rd was always hard for me to hit at a high RPM. I bought the Tri-Ax shifter, and when I go from 2nd to 3rd I have to force myself to just use the palm of my hand on the shift **** to shift it. It will automaticaly go into 3rd because of the springs in the shifter. If I grab the shifter, and try to force it into 3rd, bam, I miss and hit the brick wall. So try to relax, and just use the palm of your hand to shift once, and see if that works. Oh, and by the way, I never take my foot out of it, it's always nailed to the floor.

Thanks Mott i'll try and go easy. You know when your in the heat of the moment its kind of hard to relax and gently shift.
