Default 3650 crap or just a bad one

has any body had as many problems as i have with a 3650.

i bought the car used with 30000 miles on it.

2 weeks later, the track claimed the first set of internals... thank god for warrantys. they take my car and mess around with it for a week and a half and give it back. they had to replace everything. i was looking at the service records and for the amount they spent to fix they shoud have bought me a tko. and not had to worry about it

broke in the new tranny with about 500 easy freeway miles and putting around town. go to the track and half way through the night every time i shifted i noticed more and more of a grind... i was pisssed. first for how long it took them to r and r a tranny and second for how quick it went out. i didnt even miss a shift once. i decided to beat the thing up as bad as i could to get a replacement. back to that whole driving it like your rich thing. by the end of the night of 15 runs. i lost syncros in second and third gears.

took it back and talkedto the manager and ended up needing a week to replace a second and third gear plus syncros. great ...

get it back and same thing happens a couple more times

with in 6000 miles of driving my car the score is curently

2500 miles since last rebuild

100% new internals- 2
Syncros - 3
clutch/t.o bearing/ piolet bearing/alignment/wheel rotation/brake service/ and tune ups....all complementary for my rations( i mean troubles) and 5 complementary oil filter and oil changes coupons. still got 3 left

has anybody had these kinds of problems... or is mine just a bad seed???

I know that power shifting is a good way to destroy a T5 not sure about your tranny. I have had 2 stangs with T5s and never had a tranny problem since I do not power shift. I do drive fast and hard just no power shifting.

Default 3650 crap

Midnightblue, I think you've had very bad luck with your tranny for some reason. Perhaps the replacement parts or the people rebuilding it? I know the most vulnerable gear is third in a 3650, but I've given mine a fair amount of abuse with no problems. There are after market suppliers out there that allow you to use the same case with fortified internals, different gear ratios, etc. My theory is if OEM breaks, do not replace with OEM again. But I know the cost factor for a transmission can be bad for the budget. When my axle broke @ 8000 miles on the clock, I seized that opportunity to re-do the differential, axles and ring and pinion with something that would be bulletproof, at least for my intended use.

I think in general the 3650 is a good trans. At the Ford dealer where I work we recently saw the first problem with a 3650, so for the trans being out for 4 years that is not too bad. The Tech at our shop had a very difficult time repairing the trans, it had a bad synchro, it would always grind going into second. When he reassembled it and tested it never left the shop because of a bad bearing whine. So we ended up calling Ford and they authorized a new trans. My suggestion would be sit down and have a polite conversation with the Service Manager and persuade him to try to authorize a new trans for your car.Good luck I hope all goes well!

Damn that is some bad luck. I have been having this problem with my car for the past two weeks or so. It seems that when I am making a right turn from a stop sign, and I'm shifting into second I hear a loud like cracking/grinding type sound, but it only happens at this one stop sign near my house that I can tell from. But it isn't anything on the road or anything like that. It is really starting to annoy me, but I can't take off work right now to go drop it off at the Ford dealer. Hope my trans isn't screwing up.

same type of problem here, 02 Gt 18,000miles, 3650 trans and it grinds like hell every now and again, every time i get on it and shift to 3rd it is a consitant grind. Had the car looked at at winner ford and they wouldent fix it because of an o/r H pipe. so i am stuck with a grinding trany. it sux!!

Mines hasn't broken yet! My GT currently has 62k miles and the little ol 3650 has held about 40-50 4 grand launches on 275/40 17's drs at the track! You need to learn to feather the clutch instead of dumping it off the line! Do you have an aftermarket shifter! It helps your transmission alot!

That is BS man. If there is an aftermarket part on your car, they have to prove that it caused the problem. And I highly doubt they can prove that an o/r pipe messed up your tranny. I hate Ford dealers like that.

No problems on my 04 stang yet, but I have heard that FDord issued a service bulletin for earlier models with this trans so check it out at your dealer

Currently I have 143,000 on my 00 gt and the only gripe I have about the t-3650 is the whining noise it makes.

That really sucks man. The main issue that I've been having is that shifting into 2nd has been getting worse and worse to the point where sometimes I go into 4th instead. Also, the more and more I drive in a day around town and as the trans heats up, the trans goes from getting easier to shifter to becoming a work-out.

When I got one everyone told me it was complete crap and should try to find a used T3650, but so far I've had no problems.

murdered 3 3650's before 36K miles. Been on this one for almost 40K. There were definitely problems but I've figured out how to deal with most of them.

I'm thinking of ditching my plans for a tko600 and adapting a tr6060 so I can have the .8:1 5th. We'll see if I can find one.

Exclamation

I put 3 years & 300+ 1/4-mile passes on my stock 3650/clutch/ppressure-plate before finally losing my 3rd gear synchro (tranny still worked, but it was grinding going into 3rd).

200+ of these passes were launching @ 6800 - 7000 rpm on slicks.

The 3650 transmission is a tough transmission IF the clutch cable is properly adjusted & KEPT that way. I feel that I'd still be using my original 3650 today if I'd adjusted the cable before the track visit that cost me the 3rd gear synchro.

An aftermarket firewall adjuster & quadrant are a MUST for any pre-'05 Mustang IMHO, and regular adjustments will go a long way to lengthening the life of the 3650...
