What is this thing?
Sorry guys. I am new to the Mustang thing. All my life I have been a (forgive me) Chevy guy. I finaly realized that Mustang was the way to go. Having said that, this is a whole new animal.
I am wondering what the sensor is that is in the air intake tube. I know that there are 2, but I am talking about the one directly after the filter. It appears to be a mass airflow sensor? Am I right? And if it is, would I benefit to cut out the screen around it for better flow? It looks like window screen on both sides. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That is the Mass Air Flow Meter or MAF. It is the root of all evils of a Mustang owner (jk).
Ed Clark who is about the smartest Mustang guru on the planet recomends that you do not remove it. The purpose of the screen is to impart laminar flow acrss the MAF and the car is "tuned" for it. With that said, all the after-market CAI's don't use them.
I have seen dyno results with and w/o the screen. you will pickup about 5 rwhp with it removed which is really interesting considering most of the CAI's are good for about 7 - 8 rwhp. makes you wonder even more, right? In addition to increasing the hp a tad, the car will run a tad more lean. I have seen dyno results with blown cobra's and the leaning from screen removal was too much on them for the application.
BTW, mine is removed because of my Steeda CAI. (lol)
