Yep I'm a dumbass!
I was driving down the highway today and was going to pass a car, so I tried downshifting into 3rd, it went in hard for some reason and I was like 'what the hell' then I started to let the clutch out and it got to about 4,000rpm's and i thought it was almost fully disengaged so I let it out all the way... sure enough I had shifted into 1st :bash: :censored: :wallbash:
RPM's jumped to 7200-7500 somewhere in there (btw redline is 6800) and I quickly pushed the clutch back in and proceeded to shift into third. I'd say it was doing about 55 when I started going into gear and 45 when the clutch was all the way out. I'm just wondering if my idiotic mistake is gonna shorten the life of the drivetrain (engine/tranny?)
I wanted to cry I felt so bad because I try and take such good care of it and now I feel like it's got 100,000 more miles on it.
Just wanted to rant and find out if you guys think I would've done any harm?

I should've known since it went into gear so hard. I hate the stupid stock shifter, it's so rubbery. I'd get a performance one but dont have money plus I had one on my V6 and it let a lot more noise in, so I don't want that too bad.

Wow that's pretty hard to do.....please save a little money and get rid of that piece of crap stock shifter.....you'll never miss third and you will for sure never do that again. It was the first mod I did and it makes the car much more fun to drive.

I did something similar to this a long time ago. Back in 1990-1993 I had a Cavalier Z-24. I traded it in for a Camaro. At about 2-3 weeks of owning the Camaro, I was coming up on a light that was green. It then changed to yellow. So I immediatley decided to shift into third gear and gun it to beat the red. So I grabbed the shifter, threw it straight up (as that's where 3rd was on my Z-24). Problem was, I wasn't driving my Z-24 anymore. Which meant I also wasn't driving a manual trans. anymore either. So, driving at anout 45-50mph, I ended up slamming my automatic from D to R. It was at the dealership for repairs for about a week and a half.

I've got a question...how long you been driving stick? ANd how old are you?
I drove an old 85 porsche 911. fast, fun car, but the shifter flipped around whereever it wanted to go. You very well could accidently shift it to 1st if you didnt know exactly what you were doing. With mustang shifter, the shifter naturally stays between 3rd and 4th gear so going to 3rd is just from neutral and straight up. You had to TRY to go to 1st cuz seriously, you're an idiot. As everyone has said, it's hard enough to jam it in 1st when going over 15 mph, but you going 55 and thrusting it into 1st has got to be one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard of. Um....something isnt adding up here.
Redline is at 6800, fuel cutoff is at 7100, and if you slammed it into first at that speed (which is VERY hard to do, even with a T-3650 or my T-45), your doing 8,637.9 RPM, which would basically blow both your block and tranny apart, and blow a few rods and pistons out of your block.
Even if your car was in at 7200-7500 before you slammed the clutch back in, your engine would have been gone and the fuel cutoff would have occured, at which point you would have to stop the car and get a tow, as well as a new block/tranny.

If the story is true, then he probably pushed the clutch in before the rpms went that high.

What he did is possible. I can shift into 1st pretty easily while on the interstate. You just better not let the clutch out lol. Trust me you didnt do any damage to the engine. You factory rev limiter is there for things just like this. Yor valves wont start floating until about 1000rpm higher than the stock rev limiter. Its OK dont sweat it. Just try not to let it happen again.

Something similar happen to me, a while back. I was @ about 5900 rpms on 3rd gear. I tried to powershift into 4th but i accidently shifted into 2nd gear. The rpms flew to about 7xxx and my wheels locked up. I was sure, my tranny and my motor was ****ed, but to my amazement, my car was ok. So I, think your story is real and your car should be ok..

Haha why would I come on here and make up a story so people can call me a liar and/or horrible driver? I've been driving manuals since time began, my brother had a manual racing quad, I drive tractors all the time, I have drove dirtbikes, I've drove two manual F-250's almost daily before I got my first V6 stang (manual) and now I'm on my second one.
I know how to drive, dannyb, when you get in an accident (and it will happen sometime) I'll call you a horrible driver too.
Things happen. And no it's not that hard to get into first gear, especially with that weak shifter that wobbles back and forth practically.
And I was down to 40-45ish when the clutch was all the way out, only for a split second. I think I know what happened. And no I'm not lieing, that would be pointless.
