Default Ported Heads vs Blower......

Well I know that the obvious answer would be on an N/a mustang, but what about me? I need to make the decision whether I should go through with buying a supercharger or buy some ported heads and cams.

I like the sound of the blower whine, but during the school semesters I dont have alot of money to spend on gas. I drove an 03 cobra for awhile and it sucked down gas like crazy. I went through like 20 bucks in gas ONE DAY in that thing. I cant handle that kind of mileage when im in school. summer is a different story. Later on when I get out of school I will be looking towards a turbo setup.

Would it be more worthwhile to buy ported heads, some comp 262 cams, and some nice longtube headers? I dont want an agressive idle. just something that sounds nice. How much would all of this cost me? Im sure that I would need it tuned. That would be a good thing since I need to get a nitrous tune anyways. I think heads cost $1800? cams maybe $500 and longtubes $400? Are there any guys out there with a setup like this? What kinds of Track times are possible with something like this?

Its ok if I lose a little gas mileage but I just dont want to have the boost avaliable because I will use it and it will suck tons of gas. It will probably get about the same gas mileage as an 01 cobra stock with ported heads on mine. I just dont want the same as an 03 cobra.

The only reason why you get bad gas milage is because you dog it....lol.

port job and cams are not good for gas mileage...when i had my GT w/ the VT stg II's that thing sucked gas down! I do better with my cobra, cuz its only wasting gas (dramatically) when in boost!

same here man, i get right around those same numbers until i boost, im guessing you have a centri too....i will say that just recently my mpg has decreased a small amount to maybe like 20 highway (not sure about city) since i need to replace my plugs and clean my air filter

then i will say that gas mileage must be the last thing you should worry about...the question is, will you be satisfied with around 280-300rwhp? if so, just get the heads and cams...but something tells me that you will want more and that you may just be better off saving for the blower and you will end up being happier in the long run

Power doesnt have that much to do with track times. Im running mid- high 12's through an auto with only 262rwhp. With the nitrous I should be low- mid 11's. I also only get around 150-160 miles per tank with 100% city driving. If you want to go with a turbo or blower in the future then those cams wont be good. If you want turbo in the future then you wont be able to run those LT's. Also plan on spending more then those prices you listed in the first post.

When I got out of that 03 cobra and jumped into the GT......the difference was Tremendous. The GT felt like it only had HALF of the engine that the cobra had. It was so much smoother power and I LOVED the blower whine. Thats why I have been thinking about going the blown route. I am not very satisfied with the stock N/A power even if it is alot of fun. I am satisfied with the power my car makes while on the spray but nitrous has its disadvantages too. The reason I like my nitrous setup so much is because I have it setup where I dont even have to worry about it much and it comes on automatic with no microswitch and the window switch is GREAT! My car makes enough power for me right now but I have found that I will get used to the power soon and i will end up wanting more. I had that 03 cobra for a week and I got used to it. Ended up taking it back before I had the chance to put my nitrous kit on it. I was going to use the ZEX kit I had for my GT on it......LMAO.

Another reason is because I have some miles on the motor and it will need to be rebuilt within the next 1 or 2 years. Shes got 80,000 on her but it runs like new(maybe better). Oil has been changed every 3K. I may be having a leakdown test done sometime soon just to check it out. If I go ahead and buy ported heads then thats just one less thing I have to worry about when I go to build the bottom end. I cant buy another car so ill be keeping this one for a long time.

There is no need to think about wasting money on long tubes because the turbo wont come for another couple of years at least. ill get some good use out of long tubes till then.

Its a tough decision. I guess itll come down to whats cheaper in the long run. I know I can have a supercharger done for like 2500 bucks. How much would heads and cams cost me installed? Sounds like it may be more than 3K.....

I agree I have spent over 5,000 for my set up with a tune...but well worth the time and money for it, so if you can get it done for 2500...do it!!
