im doing the 4.6 to 5.4 swap on my own. im swapping my stage 2 cams from my 4.6 to the 5.4 and installing stage 3 PI heads. can anyone direct me to a cite that can help me on everything that has to do whit the cams and timming chains. OH! should i get after market cam gears(fidanza)and how should i know if i need to retard or forward the time?

You don't "Need" to Advance or Retard the timing it all depends on the Setup and what you want out of the motor.Any more info on the 5.4 or is just a Stock Head/Cam Motor?Any Power adder etc?

In general you can retard the cams a few degrees to stretch the RPM of peak power out a little. If you want to pick up the bottom end power a bit then advance them a couple degrees. 1 degree matters. Use caution.
I've seen too many reports of aftermarket cam gears fragging. I'm a little wary of them. Your cam selection should match your intended use. If it's a street car, look at common stage 2 cams. Hi-Tech would be a great place to call.

you read it wrong A- for effort too , I don't know if the engine mounts are the same, since that is a 3v 5.4, i want to do a 2v 5.4 since there is no intake for a 3v right now, i would keep the heads for later.. i'm going to take some pics when i see the 5.4 3v and post it here

Had to replace my steering rack due to the seals being blown out... put in a 01 cobra rack feels like new again! I may have to travel nprth soon so some delay to be expected but still counting down the days till new engine finally makes it home! Stopped by tommy vaunn ford and got some details pics and assym drawings to make things a little easier to assym too!

4.6/5.4 are the same the 3Vs are different.
But the block itself might still accept the 4.6/5.4 style mounts Considering the Block did no change much.

Did you not install the Cams in your 4.6? If you did the 5.4 is no different.

did more work on the inlet and vacuum setup. Pretty much dunz0rd there. Still need to look at that a little. Figured out how I can get my HE mounted up front, have to move the oil cooler forward a couple inches. Did a little more plumbing work on the intercooler bits. Deciding if I want to cut and splice 6 wires or if I want to continue trying to find a MAF relocation harness

Alright guys ive come into a little extra $$ and now I need opinions on what to do.
Ive got the 5.4l swap done and running pretty solid for over a year now. Im thinking about getting cams and a 3 angle head job done. My questions is would yall spend the money on that or screw it and get the HPS intake manifold now and LT's down the road. Im getting tired of the lack of power up top at the moment and want a cure LOL. Also, if cams recommended, what kind of specs should I be looking for with an N/A setup and just basic bolt-ons done.

UPDATE - TFS HEADS (GOOD NEWS) !!!
I don't know if this update has been posted here or not, but if not, HERE IT IS ...
Yall need to check out the November 2009 issue of Muscle Mustang & Fast Fords magazine, namely; pages 84-92. They did a job with the TFS heads and claim a gain of 34 HP over stock ported PI heads. The writer is Michael Galimi.
Page #86 - Paragraph #4: “The intake is styled after the OEM P.I. head, so existing manifolds bolt on and line up properly. From there, the ports take different paths. Both the intake and exhaust ports of the Twisted Wedge head are deemed “Fast as Cast”, a Trick Flow Specialties trademarked design where cast ports flow as well as CNC versions. This allows for a smaller price tag than a set of CNC’d heads.”
The next paragraph claims “the heads peaked at 0.6000-inch lift with 253 cfm for the intake side and 189 cfm for the exhaust, compared to 219 cfm (intake) and 200 cfm (exhaust) for the CNC-ported stock heads.”
Page #89 - Paragraph #1: “The Twisted Wedge Two-valve heads are the only 1.840-inch intake valve heads on the market that you can bolt on to a stock bore/piston short block. All other 1.840-valve heads require a 0.020-inch overbore so the valves clear.” (article author Michael Galimi quoting Al Noe of TFS)
Last but not least, on page #90 there is a photo where they used all the factory cams, cam followers, and lash adjusters. They show these heads can be used with either Romeo or Windsor valve covers, as they are drilled for both (Pg. #90).
NOTE: Nothing was mentioned in the article about JESEL rocker system compatibility - BUMMER … (I think I might write JESEL and see what they say).
They did this on a P-1SC equipped car, with the end result being 499 HP and 462 RWTQ.
So there Yall have it. The new TFS heads should work with the factory 2-V BULLITT intake manifolds AND the standard factory 3.552 bores. We should be able to simply bolt everything on.
There is a lot more to the article and it is very good reading. The whole project they did sounded very worthwhile for those of us that are running the centrifugal SC(s).

Well after thinking about it, I am going to put the money into savings and after the first of the year (feb. at the latest) buy some TrickFlow heads. I can justify doing it any other way at the moment. I will see the biggest bang for my buck with these heads (i hope). Ive contemplated this for awhile but I have been a little on the impatient side lately. THinking over all the possibilities with these new heads, it just seems like the right idea.

they are mega expensive and don't make the hp to justify. don't know about the tfs heads with them.
for the 1500 bucks they cost they should make like 150-250 hp over stock. then it would be worth it.

I removed and installed mine with both a 5 spd and Auto by myself so yea!
Nice! I mounted my H.E Behind the Power steering Cooler as well using Zip ties in the same way the mounts work for an E-Fan.
I Cut and Soldered my four wires for my Mass air flow and the other two for the Air intake Temp sensor at the back of the manifold.So basically making my own relocation harness and it came out pretty well.You should Solder them tho instead of using but connectors tho if you do it.
Im ready to start mine i have fuel and spark and everything is good except the ECU Now on the look out of a 98 Auto ECU

seriously... got to put a good intake on it. By itself the HPS should wake up the top end a bit. Add longtubes and you should be near 290rw on a bone stock motor (though I would do those when you do the heads like jscott suggests). Then toss on the TFS heads and a hotter cam than you'd put in a 4.6 and get ready.
I've still got designs on the TFS heads (and they'll be seriously hogged out) but those will be a couple years off probably. I want to drive it for a while first. All connections are soldered and have shrink tubing around the joint. I don't believe in butt connectors.
It's close to running. I'm pulling a new consulting gig and I'm billing >100/hr so the scrilla is going to pile up fast. Billed 8 hrs already. Billing 4 more today and 4 more Thursday. Damn it's hard being so perfect.

iron block bored 20" over,forged crank,forged mmr h beam rods,low compression forged blower pistons with mahle rings,mellings high volume oil pump with billet gears,emp stewart high volume water pump,ported p.i heads,with port matched lightning intake,comp cams bee hive springs,comp titanium retainers,harden locks,ferra stainless steel valves,johnny lightning custom blower cams,ported eaton(for now lol) accufab single blade throttle body,already tapped for gas ,arp head studs,arp main studs,rc engineering 85 lb injectors,and a kenne bell boost a pump and boost a spark with ngk tr6 plugs. i think thats pretty much it. i am waiting for the heads to come back from the modular head shop in florida, i had nick install a set of time sert spark plug inserts,cause i have heard a lot about spark plugs blowing out of the heads. i did not come this far to be fucked by a spark plug blowing out of my head under all the boost im running next on the list is a set of the long tubes and i will be in the game
