Default 1993 z28 Lt1 vs. my 01 gt

This kid I know, has a 100% stock 1993 Z28 automatic w/68k miles on it
He thinks it's the fastest car on the street...
He also wants to race me to prove how slow mustangs are...

my car....
2001 GT 5-Speed. Drivetrain 100% stock w/ 34k miles
Only mods are flowmaster cat back, and K&N Drop in with silencer removed...

His car can't be that quick... I mean I saw the exact same car but only a 5 speed at the track and he couldn't go faster than mid- 15s...

what'd do you guys think... Should I race him the way my car is now, or wait till I get my 3.90 gears?

Oh 1 more quick question... When I order the gears, should I get the master bearing install kit or just the install kit? my car has 34k on the odometer..
thanks,

With your mileage, get the bearing kit. Some guys say wait untill 50k, but I think you are close enough and might as well be good to go for a while.

I would put my money on you. I don't think the '93's were that quick especially if it is stock and a auto. The '95's were faster if I recall.

Most guys who talk about how fast there car is, really don't have fast cars. I know a few guys personally one with a car that runs 6's, and he NEVER talks about it.

Race him now and then add the 3.90's. That way you will know and if you loose, you can always get him witht the 3.90's later. The last race will always be the important one. BTW, expect a learning curve wit the gears. Lot of guys post slower times after adding them until they learn to drive with them.

Also, what type of racing? I mean from a roll or a standstill? You will kill him off the line, then he may start catching up....or not.

Definately off the line... What kind of learning curve? Are 3.90's really that much different than the stock gears? by the way... anyone know what the stock gear numbers are? thanks,

Oh yeah one more thing... Anyone done this install themselfs? How hard was it... I've taken rearends apart before, but just afraid of messing up mine...

Don't try the gear swap yourself, unless you are a good mechanic. This job scares even some of the good ones.

There are a number of posts floating around with guys postting slower times with a gear swap. Sure, there could be other factors like DA etc... and different tracks, but it happens. 3.90's will make the car harder to launch and will take a little gettng used to.

I can tell you that my bros '95 Z28 (or is it a '97) runs high 12's n/a, but he has full exhaust (LT's) and cams. No gears though. This things have enough problems hooking as it is.

To answer another earlier question, stock GT's have 3.27's.

but the 93 is the ****test year of the lt1 they made like 265hp compaired to 285 for the other lt1 z28's minus the ss. but still my room mates 94 auto with full exhaust and intake and spray only runs 13.1's with a 100 shot. with out the juice its a high 13.7 car and i can do that with less mods and hp and more weight. The lt1 needs the juice to get going so my room mate says

Try lining up on his left side. This way he's closer to your exhaust,an untrained driver will be distracted by the sound of your exhaust over the sound of his own and will most likely shift at the wrong time.I have used this several times when racing crotch rockets with my Sportster.Wear ear plugs so it doesn't happen to you!!!Remember,JUST DRIVE THE CAR.

Not true....
Only modified ls1's are fast...

2 weeks ago I raced my buddy with his 2002 Camaro ss Auto...
We did it from a dig, I won (barely) and on the high way.... I actually pulled on him until I had to shift to 5th then he started creeping very very slowly catching up...
He said it it's not stock... Mine is!!! :headbang: :booty: Just goes to show ya... MUSTANGS ARE BETTER!!!!!

Suprisingly, he was pretty cool about the whole thing... He asked if we could do it again... but when he gets his chip... I just laughed and said sure man... any time you're ready!!!

I really didn't have to say anything....
All his friends were like... "Good thing you didn't put any money on that one!!"
I just smiled.... He was like "shutup already.."
I just smiled and said good race and shook his hand... and me and my local FORD crew, (2 lightnings, 1 01 cobra 1 03 cobra, and 2 gt's) all left with me leading... it was pretty cool.... They were like not bad... Nice first kill....
