Default 3:55 Gears

I've heard several of you mention that going with 3:55 gears is a waste of time unless your going to be putting down some serious power. But here is my question. If putting 3:73 gears on a 5 speed feels "like" you've added 30-40hp would putting 3:55 gears on a 5 speed give the feeling of adding 15-20hp?? Just curious. Thanks guys.

unless you are adding a supercharger, turbo or spray, get the 4.10's

if you lived near me i'd give you a ride, or you can see my vid. the 4.6L makes peak hp at a higher rpm and makes less tourque than a 5.0L with around the sam modifications, 3.73 is good on a 5.0L, a 4.10 in our cars makes up the difference well. I don't have a problem driving with all seasons on the street and drive 80 miles a day at 70mph getting 20-21 mpg with some city driving mixed in.

The answer to your questiuon is probably "Yes". Thing is, 3.55's cost the same to buy and install as 4.10's.

I always thought the "rule" (not sure who made up the rule, but hey!) was that 5 speeds go with 3:73's and Auto's go with 4:10's???

no way as a matter of fact sticks have an extra gear and can rev lower at crusin speeds. they say 4.10s for autos to make up for the power eaten up by the auto tranny.

Currently when I'm at 70mph my RPM's are about 1900-2000....so what would my RPM's be at 70mph with 4:10's? I'm trying to pick a gear that will give me a little extra something, but very drivable on the freeway. I have a Vert and it's already loud enough on the freeway so I don't want to be cruising at 70mph at 3000 RPM's and make it so I can't hear the passenger talk without yelling! ha ha... in some cases that might be good, especially when I'm in trouble with the little lady.....Thanks Ford for putting the mufflers right under the driver and passenger seats....thank god they fixed that problem in the 05's.

Is there a more asked question than the "what gears"?
It's real simple 3.90 is highest gear you should consider. Remember with gears higher really means lower.
5 speed 3.90's or 4.10's
automatic 4.10's or 4.30's
You will not hurt your mileage much and you will gain .3-.5 tenths going from 3.23's to 4.10 or 4.30's. If you plan on spraying or boosting down the road the 3.73 to 3.90 is your best choice. As for noise my car got quiter because all aftermaket exhaust has a point where it drones, mine is a 50 miles per hour which I almost never drive at. I'm running 4.30's thru an automatic.

I think someone posted this already, but go HERE and check out the vids. This is what made me decide on the 3.90's that I ordered from MT yesterday. Can't wait for them to get in. I was in the same boat as you and asking "What gear to get?" I think 3.90 is going to be the best decision if you are torn between 3.73 and 4.10. In my opinion, I wouldn't waste money on 3.55's, if anything, get the 3.73's, but you will definitely wonder "What if?" IMO.

the differents between 3.73s and 3.90s is about 100 rpms not worth getting the 3.73. and the 3.90s will pull much harder. i also was in 2 cars one with 3.90 and the other with 4.10s and you cant tell the differents in sotp but the rpms were about 200rpms more with 4.10s. i got the 3.90s b/c i do all highway and i wanted to be at 2500rpms at 70 miles per hour. i have an auto. with stick you will be lower on the rpms.
