Hey guys. Most of you have heard about the struggles that young Logan Field has been undergoing. While just a few months old, Logan is getting ready for his second open heart surgery.
This has been a very tiring time for Logan's Mom and Dad. His daddy goes by the handle "Jack" and is a member at this site. As a daddy myself, I know personally about the emotional and financial price that parents pay when something like this happens. While we can certainly keep Logan and his family in our thoughts and prayers, they are facing significant financial stress. They are now on one income and just paying for gas to get back and forth between the hospital is a challenge. To support them, I am asking that each member donate one tank of gas to Logan and "Jack". You can do this by sending a gift card equivalent to what you pay to fill your stang. Gift cards can be of all forms including Target, Walmart, American Express, Visa Gift card, or whatever you prefer. Naturally, you can send cash or any amount that you can spare. Please send donation to: Logan Field 5990 S Tabor St, Littleton, Co, 80127 I will be posting paypal info shortly. THANK YOU! http://mustangboards.com/lounge/2641...back-hosp.html

Well nice job, you made my wife cry. But in a good way.
lol... it has definatly been hard. She has stopped working again untill we get this figured out, unfortunatly childrens hospital recently moved to a new facility that is about 12 miles further away. All in all between her dropping her kid off at the grandparents, my going to work, the constant trips to the hospital we are averaging about 750-1000 miles per week total. Without all the hosp trips and such we would normally be putting up a combine 300 miles per week. at 3 bucks a gallon, and 25mpg, we are dumping close to 400+ a month into gas alone. Add in the rest of the bills and other baby expences, the increased cost in medical insurance, and what not, we are barely keeping our heads above water. We have another appointment with him tomorrow, this will probably be going on for a while. we have pretty much resigned ourselves to the fact were gonna be broke as hell untill this is over, but that really isnt our main concern. The boy seems so happy and healthy its really hard to fathom something like this is going wrong. We finally felt that things were gonna be ok after he was in full recovery of the first surgery, now they have to redo the entire thing. We just hope everything on the 2nd goes as well as on the first. We have no idea when the surgery will be, we hope to learn tomorrow when we talk to his cardiologists. if it goes out past january he will be on my medical plan instead of medicade and this will probably run us up 10-15k in hospital bills. Ill eagerly pay whatever i have to without a second thought though and consider it a good deal. Anyways, this is really nice of you to put this up, seriously, you have no idea how much Rebecca and i appreciate it. Ive never been good at asking people for anything. The nice thing is with people like you i dont have to. its funny everyone always says stuff on here like "its only the internet, and dont take the internet seriously" which for the most part is true, but this place is real, this community is real, and all the people here are real. While i have never met a single one of you i consider many of you friends and the support you have all shown me really has been a great help. Thank you all. Chris, Rebecca, Tyler and Logan. |

I have paypal, my sign on name is Christoph281@hotmail.com
im not sure if there is a link or something else that is supposed to be used, im not too good at paypal but that should be it i believe. Talked to the doctors today Things are starting to get real scary. Either we do the surgery now, we do it later, or we dont do it. One of the flaps in the replacement valve is stuck shut. It will remain this way unless it is replaced. So far he is doing ok, they do not know what to do. There are a lot of factors to add into this. First off, he may be fine with the valve AS-IS for th next 10 years. It is impossible to tell. The other flap may also get stuck, it is once again impossible to tell. If it DOES get stuck and it is in the open position it will cause a lot of regurgitation back into the ventrical. He will have similar symptoms as before and we will see these, bring him in, replace the valve and hope for the best. The flap may also get stuck in the closed position. In which case he will die almost immediatly. It does not matter if he is in the hospital in the Cardiac ICU, if this happens he WILL die. Surgery. Well, shit, it would be the 2nd open heart surgery in an infant that they still consider too small even for his first surgery. He will have more scarr tissue, the surgery may or may not be able to replace the valve. They MIGHT go in there and find that there is too much damage to the area to replace the faulty valve and have to hope that this one lasts him. They might be able to go in, and swap it out without a problem. risks risks risks. So, our cardiologist believes we should try waiting it out a bit. Our surgeon origionally figured he better get back in there and fix this. The Main problem here is logan has now had 2 issues that are VERY rare, first the heart valve problem is very unique. The failure of the valve is also rare. My cardiologist said the best they could find through research is some kid in france had something similar. His valve got stuck open after 18 months. they replaced it, and records dont say much after that. So, the doctors are not sure what to do. They asked my wife and i what we would like to see done, i advised that we would deffer to any decision that they make, and that they have the experience and have the best answer. Then she said they did not know what to do. The doctors are divided into 2 camps, the ones that are for immediate surgery, and the ones who think it is way too risky and we should wait and see if it eventually gets stuck open and hope he lasts long enough to get the surgery later. so... the decision may very well fall on us. There is no RIGHT decision, and no WRONG decision. We are unified in our thought that if the doctors cant agree on one course of action over another, that we will opt for the surgery. We have to face the fact once again, that our son may not make it. We have to look at this logically. If my son were to die, i would rather it because we took action to correct the issue. Rather than just waited to see if he would die or not on his own. I couldnt even begin to fathom waking up in the middle of the night and checking on him to see the worst has happened, and having to wake up his mother and tell her what happened. We cannot sit and do nothing. If we wait and he dies, we would never forgive ourselves. If he dies on the table, well dammit at least we did what we could. needless to say things are getting pretty heavy right about now. we should hear back from the cardiologist and weather or not they have come to a unified decisive decision we we would deffer to, or if they need us to make that decision. Will keep everyone posted. Last edited by JackThe Ripper : 10-10-2007 at 02:35 PM. |

Chris,
Check you mail box in the next few day, I mail you something today. Hang in there, and you are 100% correct on the fact that this point there are no wrong decisions. As a parent we have to what we think is best for our families sometimes. Glen Halbert |

Well wi$hes sent. Wish I could have done more.
In my life I've learned the hard way that it's times of turmoil that you find out who your friends really are. Remember where yours are and don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it. |

Its going. Aside from the fact he could keel over at any moment he seems to be doing suprisingly well.
As for now, since he seems to be ok they want to hold off on the surgery for a while and let him heal as much as possible from the last operation and to let him gain some weight up as well. The one thing we DO know is he WILL get another surgery. However they much balance between doing the surgery sooner and later. Reasons for doing it later: He is young, he is still too tiny for them to do open heart surgery, let alone a 2nd open heart surgery. If they do the surgery now they expect to run into some possible complications as his heart around the valve will not be fully healed as of yet. If they wait, the scar tissue that is developing around the artifical valve will become stronger and actually make the next surgery easier. Doing the surgery this early is very risky. While he is young he seems to be doing fine, the longer they wait the more likely the surgery will be successful. In the meantime if his hearet valves remaining leaflet gets stuck in an open position we will be in the same boat as before, we will see a noticeable decline in health and all the warning signs, we will have time to bring him in the hospital and days if not weeks to get the surgery scheduled and done. Resons for doing it sooner: His heart valve has 2 leaflets that open and close with a hinge running through the middle. One of the leaflets is stuck shut. Nobody knows why, they doubt that the valve could have been defective, there are too many checks and tests done on the valve vefore the would put it in a person. If the valve stops functioning and the leaflet is stuck in a closed position, he will die almost immediatly without any warning. The longer we wait to do the surgery the greater chance we have of the heart valve ceasing to function. There is NO way to gauge how long it will last. It could stop right now. Logan is doing just fine, he is gaining weight, he has a great attitude and loves to smile. He is up to par with all the baby milestones and it is hard to remember there is something wrong. But no matter how healthy and happy he seems, his heartvalve is a ticking timebomb with no numbers to tell you how long he has. The harsh reality that my wife and i have to accept is that any moment he could drop dead. For all i know he could have died while i wrote this post. So.... i think right now we are looking to see if he can get close to 1 year old. In the meantime we are taking him to the hospital for regular checkups, the cardiologists are watching his heart valve like a hawk waiting for the slightest decline in health. So.... right now we try not to make any concrete plans in anything. Here is his serious introspective pic... ![]() Here is my fam at Halloween.
