Default My first car...

Hey guys, I'm new here, righfully so. I'm getting my license on Tuesday, so I went car shopping this weekend. I've always had an interest in cars, especially mustangs. I have a couple questions I'd like to ask. Now please keep in mind my pros AND cons, because if there weren't any problems, you know I'd be in an 06 Mustang GT. But...

Insurance is raping me up the ass as we speak. It'll cost me ~ $187 / month, if I do indeed get a mustang. $100 / month flat rate if I get something...slower? Like a 4 door 4 banger sedan. But that's not realistic, for me.

I went to my Ford dealer, mainly because the guy we deal with has sold us 3 cars in the past...4 months? Yeah, so we buy a lot from him. We look on the internet for his chain of stores, and find out the oldest stang is an '01. I would really prefer the '98 and lower, I personally don't care for the 99-04. My rents are anal about me buying from some random roadside person, because we don't know if he's legit, and if he knows about cars. Also, they don't want me having over...60k miles...yes, it blows.

So my parent's keep telling me to "not rush into buying a car if I don't like it", but at the same time, they're trying to get me to buy an '01-'03.

So here's my delima. Should I wait for a "legit" 98 and older mustang to come around, or should I just go with the 01 v6 manual..?(GT's=wayyy too much for insurance)

edit: I'm looking to spend 11k on the car out the door, after taxes and everything. Keep that in mind, please.

Sigh...I guess you didn't read the part where I said GT would put me over the limit on insurance.

If you do change your mind and step up to the GT stang ( which is your best bet) stay away from the 1998 model. This year Gt is considered the slower model. Take your time, read all you can about all models. You can find out alot of info on line.

Do your research before you hop onto a v6. By far 94-98 v6's were like the slowest mustangs ever. Even the 99-04 V6's are pretty damn slow. My first stang was a 2002 Mustang V6 and it didn't last long before i traded that in. It was extremely slow, like I would lose to chevy lumina's and civics. If your looking for speed dont hop onto a v6, I really really wish I had people tell me this before I bought my v6. I even had one friend who had an extremely fixed up v6, he had just about everything you can think of other then real power adders on his v6 and he would lose to stock GTs. I always see 99-00 GT's going for $10k. Insurance aint that BIG of a diff, and if anything just try to get your mom to put it under her name.


Quick v6 cliffnotes:

-Ford didn't make the v6 for speed, The v6 was only made for people who liked the body style
-Gas is exactly the same on a stock v6 and a stock GT. The reason for this is because the GT uses less power to move the heavy car.
-If you plan on fixing up your v6, With the money you plan on fixing up your v6 use it towards the insurance of a GT.
-Resale value of a v6 is crap. I bought my 03 v6 for $11,999 in June 2005, sold it March of 2006 for $7,500.

you are the first person ive heard of that like the older ones more than the 99+s
id still try to get a gt....just get an older one and use the money you saved in getting an older one on insurance.....but if u realllly cant get a gt then id say like a 03 v6

or buy a fox body w/ a 4 cyl. and put in a 408 stroker
save alot more on insurance:clap:

We'll if you can only get the V6, then i would get it. My friends 04 V6 runs like a 96-98 GT(stock) at the track. His has the basic bolt ons and 3.73 gears and T lock. He couldn't get a GT either cause it would have been like 300 a month for insurance. With the V6 he pays like 150.
But that doesn't mean you can't have a V6 for now and down the road get a GT when insurance won't rape you. Or like my freind is going to do, when the warranty, haha, runs out,, he's going to drop a 4.6 maybe 5.4 into it, better tranny and 8.8 rear end.
And I was selling my 95 GT before he bought his V6 and stock they are only 215 HP (though it was almost 300Hp to the wheels) and they still wanted to rape him on an older car cause it's a GT.

i would rather have the newer v6 and just mod it. with a simple used supercharger you can run like a GT.

Thanks for all the good reply's, I really am glad I came here first. Personally, the main reason I probobly like the older bodies is because I see more done to them. I see SO many stock 99-04's, I'm not exactly interested. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying buying a 98 and older and putting a muffler, rims, and spoiler on it will make it fast, trust me, I'm not trying to be a ricer here. On the '03 V6, that's about $200 / month, just in insurance, which means I'll have to find one for ~ 10k or less, out the door(after taxes and EVERYTHING), which means I'll have to find one with > 66k miles. Not nescessarily a bad thing, to me. But my rents are cosigning, so I have to weigh their opinion, and their demands.

I believe the 98 GT is ~ $180/month. '03 V6 ~ $200/month. 97 and lower ~ $150 a month, which is what I'm really looking at. I'll try and find out on the 94ish GT.

If you don't suggest a mustang due to it being slower than my personal liking, what do you suggest? I really wanna stay away from civics, integras, preludes, etc, mainly due to the amount of ricers at my school. But I also don't want to get beat by them on the road....

the insurance on my 99 gt is cheaper than my 99 v6 and my the insurance on my 87 'vette is cheaper than the gt of and im 17 so just get a c4 'vette

I agree with your parents... don't rush into it buying a car... I shopped for my car from JR year to a month before college began before I bought my car...

Older gts are cheaper then newer as far as insurance...

But to answer your question... What would you rather have, an SN95 or a new mustang? Ya'll find a car eventually...

It's neat you are getting to consider Mustangs for your first car. I wanted one, but the parentals at the time made me get my g'ma's 1986 Buick Lesabre! It had a v6...but it was A LESABRE!!!! They would'nt co-sign anything and I wasn't allowed to have a job, so I was screwed. I was 16 though, and had to obey. Where I lived then, a kid had to have a signed document from the parents or no job. So all in all you are lucky. Hope you find the best car for you.

Okay, first off, I'm 18. I owned a '99 V6 for a year and a half, definitely not winning any races. Then I saw a '99 GT at a local dealer and made the plunge about a week ago. When I called to change my insurance over to the other car, they said the insurance on the GT and the V6 was the same price, although I got it put on my name instead of my parent's so it ended up being $800 more a year.

You said you're worried about paying $200 a month? Try living in Michigan. Our insurance is generally a lot higher because we're "no fault" state. I think I'm paying around $4000/yr in insurance on my '99 GT now.
