Default Question about connecting steering shaft and column

I just replaced the heater core.(details on that later)

Go the dash back in,and Im securing that.

How do I make sure that the steering shaft is dialed in correctly with the wheel ? When the two are not connected ,the wheel will turn forever while turning right .If I turn it to the left ,it will come to a stop after a few turns.

What position does the wheel need to be in ,when I put the shaft into the connection for the steering column? Also, what about the groove on the top of the shaft ? How should that be located ?

its a 97GT
