Default being an adult sucks

Well I just received the phone call I've been waiting on for several months now. Beach Ford called with info about ordering the Shelby. April 1st at 9am, with a check for $1000. Now, ordinarily I would have been super stoked about this. I've been a Mustang lover for as long as I can remember. I've dreamed of owning a Shelby for just as long. Unfortunately the details surrounding this car make it unrealistic for me to have one at this time. The delivery is scheduled at or about the time I am getting out of the Navy. Right now the only detail known about either event is the date I get out, October 9. I don't know a price for the car, I don't know a delivery date for the car. I don't have a clue how much money we're going to make on the sale of this house. I don't know how much money either my wife or I will be making. I don't have the slightest idea how much of a mortgage I'm going to have. I simply don't know enough about later this year to make a committment of this nature and this magnitude. All rumors point towards a price of at least $70,000.

So tomorrow I'm going to the dealership to talk to the owner and tell him I have to pass on this years car. My wife was gracious enough to agree that unless we're in dire financial straits when the list for the '08 model comes out, we can get on that one and actually take delivery of it.

The flip side of all this is that we already have a 475+ bhp horsepower GT. I can make it handle as well as a GT500 with carefully chosen and performed suspension mods. The only thing is that it will never be a Shelby.

Just give them the money....most likely you will NOT have to take delivery of the car. This si NOT a contract if they cant tell you what you are gonna pay for it and even so, you can always back out and get your money back.

In the unlikely event that you get to pay sticker, you just buy the dam thing and then sell it for whatever you can get, which would be a lot more.

Also, eventhough they are taking meoney from you, you are NOT guarenteed to get the car.

The dealer will try to get as many deposits as they can...this way they will get as many cars as they can. Best case scenario for them is that you order one and then change uyour mind. Then, they can sell it to the highest bidder. BUT, they probably can NOT order a car w/o a bonafide deposit from a customer.

Yeah I thought about that. But If I were to take delivery of it with the intention of reselling it, I know I'd never do it. I've wanted it for too long for that to happen.

The owner of the dealership that called me said 70 was not out of the question but they also don't have final MSRP yet. He's hoping they will have that before April 1st. I've also heard the 70 figure from a friend in NC that sells Fords. Even if it was 'only' 55K I wouldn't do it at this point. I have no certainty at all about my finances in the latter part of this year.

I talked to a local dealer and they said they would only be getting about 2 per dealer. If thats the case 70 could be right on target. I remember seeing the 2000 Cobra R for 75k not sure if it every sold but I see many now for less than MSRP. The only issue now is that we are talking about a Shelby which hasnt been made in a few decades.

My advice would be to take care of your family and your new house before you think about getting the car. Find out if you can afford it before you buy it..

I work at a Ford dealer and our aftermarket guys say that we are only getting 3 of them and we already have a list of about 35 people. They are talking about getting 65-75k per car.

I say screw em, dont worry about being one of the first to get a hold of one, and do what the smart people are going to do and wait. The shine will wear off eventually, because once again, it is JUST A MUSTANG. There is NO sense whatsoever in paying 50k or god forbid 70k for a mustang. That is just ridiculous. Send them the check if you want, or just wait, you WILL get one, sooner or later, just be patient.

Remember when the BMW Z-3 first came out? They were really something back then. I had a $1000 deposit on one and then my wife got pregnant and we backed out. They gave me my money back, but had I not backed-out, I could have sold the car and made $10k. But, it was a risk I could not afford to take.

When I bought my GT the 03 Cobra's were just showing up at the dealership. They had a mineral gray vert roped off in the middle of the showroom. The hood was up and that damn Eaton was calling out to me. I walk over and there is a big sign saying $5,000 over the sticker. So I walk around to look at the sticker and it says 42 grand so I think 42 plus 5 is 47 and I can buy a GT premiun for 23k. It was a rather easy decision. Fast forward to last winter and the 05's were just showing up. I take my daughter over to look at the Ford GT super car in the showroom. A salesman saw us pull up in the blue bomb and walks over to talk. He says he has a brand new 04 vert Cobra sitting in the lot covered in snow and would let it go for 27k. I felt like the dude in animal house when the under age chick passes out drunk. The devil on on shoulder saying "trade in the GT, it's a slow p.o.s. the angel on the other shoulder saying "you must resist and actually pay off a car dummy" I was strong and drove home in my slow p.o.s.. These are not real Shelby's, they are Shelby's in name only. They are an SVT Cobra with a marketing gimmick. They will come down in price just like the 03's did. And I will be there to ****** one up for under the sticker. If they don't drop the price they can keep em. Buy a house and forget about the Shelby for now. Or buy it and make some money off of it. Remember it's not a Shelby it's a rip off.
