Default tuner for v6

I do not know a thing about tuners. I have read where certain ones claim to increase HP up to 27 (the diablosport predator). I'd love to do that...but I don't know how anything about cars...much less what all the tuning options mean. Are there pre-set modes on the tuner, such as "make car go faster," or do I really have to know all this stuff about axles and blah blah blah. Is there any way a local mechanic shop can use this tuner for me if I tell them "I want to make my car go faster!"?

thanks.

A general mechanic will not know what you are talking about.

When you buy a tuner, it comes equipped with one or more performance tunes specifically for your car. The tune gets downloaded from the tuner to the cars computer by the owner. The download is easy and takes a few minutes.

These tunes generally increase hp by leaning up the air fuel ratio and by advancing the timing. You should not expect more then 15 hp increase from one of these and that is even a lot.

Tuners can also do other things like raising rev limiter, speedometer calibration for gear changes, firm up shift points for automatics, and many more features. They can also read codes for when the SES light comes on.

Some tuners and tuning software allow the user to make changes to the programs on their own. These features would not be for the beginner, but are not hard to understand. But you can chose to completely ignore these features and still get a lot from the tuner.

thanks...I appreciate your help...

So, if I were to get a tuner that had all of the very detailed options, does a book come with it or anything that would tell me (a guy who knows nothing about cars) exactly how much to change something like the rev limiter, and exactly what each option does? I guess I'm asking if it's user-friendly.

If not, are there any books I can buy that are like "tuning for dummies?"

Also, I have seen that some tuners require you to hook to the internet, use your computer, and download all this stuff. Stuff that I'm sure is way over my head. Any way around this and still get a GOOD tuner?

Lastly, can you recommend a good tuner? I was looking at the diablosport predator for 2005 v6, and it has lots of fancy options, but I don't know if this in reality is a good buy or not.

Oh, and even more important. Will the tuner adjustments void my warranty? Can I restore everything back to its original configuration so a Ford dealer will not know I changed them if so?

There wshould be a manual with the tuner, BUT it will most likely assume that you have some knowledge. Quite frankly, forums such as this are the best places to learn. Also, SCT has specific forum for their customers and the retailer that you buy the device from should be able to assist you.

As far as a "tuning for dummies" book, you have come to the right place. I would encourage you to also join modularmisfits forums and also modular depot forums. There are some really smart guys there, but no all of them have the paitience to help a newbee.

Since you are a beginner, the best thing might be to just leave the tuner alone and do not make any adjustments. It will already come tunned specifically for your car.

The tuner will then give you the ability to change the air fuel ratio somewhat and adjust timing. For the most part, some of these adjustment are very minor so as to protect the user from damaging the car. in other cases this might not be the case. Some devices allow for complete control and others do not.

If I were you I would purchase either the Diablo Pred, or one of the SCT XCal devices. My preference is for SCT. Then, just stick with the tune they give you until you learn more about your car and the tuner.

Tuners only void warrenties if you get caught. Prior to going in for service, you can install the stock tune and no one will know.

Being new at all this computer tuning myself, could you please tell me;

Is the original tuning information uploaded into the tuner prior to setting the new tune, or, does the tuner come with this info on it?

Also, if the info comes on the tuner, is this considered to be an "extra" tune price-wise?

Thanks,

FritZ
