Hello, I drive an '01 V6 mustang. I have been having this funny whining noise, constantly, and the fact that the nose speeds up with the engine automatically made me think it was something on the belt. I also noticed that when I'm sitting in park in a parking lot if I turn my steering wheel left and right it makes the nose a lot louder. So I took it into Meineke and they said the pump was leaking and the return hose was also, so I got it replaced for $260 and they told me the way ford set up their power steering system, it is really hard to bleed the fluid to get all the air out of the system? So they said after driving it a couple days (they specifically said 2-3) it would bleed itself and get the air out and the noise would go away. So after driving about 70 miles, 2 days later, the noise is still there and just as loud as it has ever been. Does anyone else know anything about this problem, what it may be etc, or it is really just a matter of time...

any information would be greatly appreciated

 

I had the same problem with the return lines, I just solders the line and made sure they didnt rub together. It still makes some noise I just fill it with normal power steering fluid + some Lucas to thicken it up to keep it a little quieter.

 

I used to have an issue with my P/S pump making noise durring autocross events when the fluidgt hot. I installed an in-line fluid cooler, replaced the fluid with good quality ATF fluid, I used Mobil 1, and neverh ad a problem again. If the pump is new then that shouldn't be the problem or else you need to take it back to Meineke. Ensure that you have good fluid, enough fluid, and that it isn't getting too hot. It is difficult to get all of the old fluid out. You can bump start the engine to spin the pump, drain the old fluid and add new fluid at the same time. Might have to try and repace the fluid a couple of times to get all the old stuff out.

 

Okay, now they have tried 3 new power steering pumps and it hasn't quieted at all yet. Now they say they see tiny shavings of metal in the fluid. What could be causing this? They said it's something grinding on the steering column.
