2.73 to 3.27 worth anything?
hey i have a 96 stock 7.5 rear end setup with 2.73 gears. so someone wanted to get rid of his new edge 7.5 rear that he replaced to a gt rear. so it was sitting around. i think it came off an 03, so i looked at the tag on it and it has 3.27 gears in it. i already know it is about a 2" difference but i am assuming that with no lowering of the vehicle and stock rims i should have no clearance issues. now i picked it up for 40 dollars with the intention of putting some 3.73 gears in there myself. but thinkin of it and knowing it has to be set up just right i am wandering if i would feel much difference going from 2.73 to 3.27. i know 3.73 would be great but is a 40 dollar upgrade from 2.73 to 3.27 worth it or should i go ahead and save it for a 3.73 build later.
and i know 3.73 or 4.10 is the way to go for most of you but i just want to know if 40 bucks is worth settling for 3.27 if you are starting out from 2.73

what i am wandering is it worth 40 dollars to bolt it up and stick with the 3.27's that are in there(will i notice a difference going from 2.73 to 3.27?) or spend more money later that i could be spending on other stuff. i am not trying to make a super fast v6 that leaves stock gt's in the dust. i just want a peppy v6 thats fun to drive around. i am probably never adding any turbo or super charger to it. maybe a split port swap is the only major upgrade i am looking at.

thinkin about it today and my thought is go ahead and swap the 03 out and use the 3.27 in lue of the 2.73 for now. then rebuild my stock 96 to put on with some 3.73 or 4.10. that way it will be the right length. if i do a good job and don't have any problems i will throw some bigger gears in the 03 rear and turn around and sell it for a profit.

Personally I think it'd be cool to have the rear just because it will space you out more than your stock rear. SO I'd keep it and wouldnt be sore about getting it... i wish i could get an entire rear for 40 bucks.. i need axles!!!!!! mine are bent.

so i think i will put it on and see how i like the spacing. then decide which one i want to put bigger gears in.
as far as the post above, 3.27 to 3.73 is not really worth it? if i do something other tan 3.27 it should be 4.10 rather than 3.73?
yea, 40 dollars for complete rear, even though its still 7.5- i couldnt pass it up

The spacing will be fine. Your wheel track width will look better if the new 7.5 is wider.
I was saying that since 3.27 to 3.73 is VERY MUCH WORTH IT, that 2.73 to 3.27 is similarly VERY MUCH WORTH IT.
4.10's for auto's, 3.73's for sticks seems to make the most people really happy.

if it was me...i'd put in the 3.27 rear. drive for a while and enjoy the upgrade. then you can decide if you want to go further with it. then take your time and do a nice 3.73 or 4.10build up. with two whole rear ends you can just swap 'em out as many times as you want

for sure. that is what i was just thinking. put the wider one on there and enjoy the little jump. then after driving it decide which one to rebuild and take as much time as i need to. i think its a nice upgrade for the price. i was told on another forum not to waste my time with another 7.5 but the price was too good to pass up.

anyone have any good tutorials bookmarked for the swap. i found a fox swap but i didn't find any 94-98 rear end swaps that went into much detail. if you have one shoot it down the pipeline please.
can i pretty much use the foxbody writeup as a guide? never fooled with springs and stuff so don't want to end up in the hospital. i know they can f_ck you up if your not doing it right. this is the one i found for a fox.

it's really just 4 bolts and you're done. Tighten big bolts to 70lbs torque.
Foxbody and SN95 are identical as far as how the rear end attaches to the car. Some bolt/nut sizes are different.

thanks everyone for your thoughts. i got some gt wheels for free this weekend when my brother put some cobra's on his 98. i think i will put them on till i can get a hold of two more bullits and swap out the rear end one weekend and leave it till i can buy some bigger gears and a rebuild kit. i have some 245/45 r17's for the front and some 275/40 zr17's for the back. i think the pushing out of the back will make them 275's look really nice. here is his before and after. he got a hell of a deal 200 dollars for a set of cobras with 2 new tires and two bad tires. i would have snatched them up if i had the cash.
