Default 8.8" rear diff on a 6'er?

I want to replace my rear end with the 8.8 tlok lsd, 31 spline axels and 3.73 gears. But one question first, 8.8" on a 6'er? good? bad?

not sure if there are any downsides to doing this, other than cost.

or should I just replace the gears on my stock 7.5" ?

will getting the 8.8" give any gains?

You can put gears and a posi on a 7.5. The only reason why I'd say get an 8.8 is if you ever planned on putting down some power.

I'm planning on putting on the X-Charger after the car's paid off.. Or maybe get a new engine, who knows.. That's 6 years in the future, I'll cross the bridge then

anyways, what all will I need (I don't plan on doing this myself, just gonna take the parts to a trusted mechanic and have him do it lol)

- 8.8" tlok lsd
- 31spline axels
- 3.73 gears w/ master bearing kit

that's it right? (I'm sure the mech can supply the oil)

If you go to an independent mechanic, I would think it would be around $2-300. And keep in mind.. If you buy that new axle I posted, you'll be spending the better part of $1300 once you include the shipping costs.

Well there are a few FRPP dealers around here, one's a shop and one's a car dealership. If I have them do it will I still be paying shipping? I'm thinking not the car dealership, last time I got a quote from them it was outrageous.

Aftermarket division quoted $1200 to put subs in the trunk of similar quality to the Shaker 1000's.. (note I already have the Shaker 500 so $1200 for just subs is insane)

shoot go find one off a front end wrecked gt. No need to pay $800 for a stick axle. You should be able to find a used one for ~400 I would guess.

Yes, but install costs are what are going to get him screwed.

Here's the way I see it. There's no since in throwing all of the money at an 8.8" until you need it. That would be like buying drag radials for your Honda Fit.

I'd say hold off on the 8.8" until you're more near into needing it. Because the issue now is for one, cost. The next thing is if you get Joe Blow to do an install because it's cheap you'd be trusting pretty much your whole car in his install.

Skip it and get something else first.

True. But if he waits to do it then he will be dumping a whole bunch of money at once into his project. This way he can meter out the cost a bit. Plus he will have the benefit of being to enjoy the gears for a while (and get used to them.)

No need to pay someone to install that rear end as its a bolt in item. The hardest part would be bleeding the brakes if you have never done it before. Otherwise its just a matter of unbolting the control arms and 3rd link, and brake lines and taking that bitch out and swapping in the other one. Don't pay someone to do something so simple. Even if it takes you a full day then do it and learn how it works and take your time.

I am a total newb, I was thinking start small and install throttle body and cai myself.. lol

second of all, that axel assembly weighs approx 314 lbs..... I have one jack (came with my spare), limited tools and can only bench 120lbs. It would be smarter to pay a mustang shop/ford dealership to do it.

Anyways I think I will be doing this farther on down the road.. throttle body, cai, tuner, and possibly headers first. I'm not rich so just that will take several months.. need another income tax return lol

Buy Jack stands and a nice jack. They are not to expensive! Throttle Body CAI are really easy i did mine and maybe took 1.5 hours to do all that plus the new ignition wires and coil.

You should just pay to have it installed. Especially if you buy the rear end without 3:73's already installed. The rear end itself is a bolt-in like Dustin said, but the gears and the T-Lok are a little more fragile in installation.

Don't put in the gears right and your rear end will fall out going 70 down the interstate, have fun then.

I was thinking about going with this when I can afford it. Pre-assembled with 3.73 gears/tlok and it shouldn't be hard to come by at FRPP dealers since it's "standard equipment on the 2008 special edition Mustang."

So I would just be paying $1099(ish) for parts and it shouldn't be too insane for labor because it's already assembled all they have to do is bolt on..

I could probably afford it by December-ish, still get the upgrades I mentioned before and be able to spend my next income tax return on rims/tires/brakes

I wouldn't even bother buying an 8.8 till you break the 7.5" in the car or make enough power to need one. I would save that money for the supercharger instead.
