Default UpGrade questions from the noob..

Alright, my first question is, did they make a 3.9L. My dad says that the engine is a 3.9L and iv'e herd that about it several times, but what iv'e researched I haven't seen anything about Ford haveing a 3.9L 04'. I haven't had the time to go out to the shop and look at it.. My other question is what should I do to my exhaust to make it dual or a good performance\ mean sound single exhaust. Everything is stock on it so I have to start from scratch, but what should I buy first? I've looked at several exhaust systems, but not to sure what to get or which company can give me what I want (good mpg\performance and a "V8" sound). Another Thing I like to upgrade is my AirFilter and Cold Air intake. I herd that boost your performance and I wanted to know if anyone knows which is the best company that makes these, but won't burn a hole in my wallet..

cai are worthless on your cars, go to ebay and get the cheapest one you can find, or check AM.com out for there cheap version. Regardless you will be lucky to get 2-3hp from that.

We have an exhaust mod sticky at the top of the page that can aswer alot fo your questions. Also your car will never sound like a v8. Im not being an ******* just letting you know you never will and be prode of your v6 power. You can get them to idle pretty deep and nasty but above 2,500rpms we all know what its going to sound like.

If you just want some extra sound a catback that spilts the pipes to a Y then dual out the back is somewhat cheap and would do the job. If you want some power you need to get rid of the y-pipe and run true duals. The v6 doesnt need a crossover because its an even firing motor. So you can just get a custom setup or go all out with long tubes,h-pipe and catback (you would use a Gt catback then).

But i would checkout the exhast sticky then see what you want to do.

yes they made a 3.9 as an option in 04. dosent mean yours is one though. Check under the hood on the fan there is a stcik if it is still there that says 3.8 or 3.9.

Yeah go the AmericanMuscle.com and get the cheep CAI its like 70 bucks all other intakes (not including ebay) are much more expensive.

Well there is away to make your six sound like an 8 but its way out of the question. Its way to hard and long and way too much money in the end you could have bought a 8 with WAAAAAYY more mods on it.

My suggestion 4 the exhaust is to go to a loacal shop that does exhaust and have them make a complete custom system for you. Dont do the Y pipe thing you will never be satisfied.

yeah it wasn't an option. They changed it like half way through I believe. Either way it doesn't make a difference though because you won't find a CAI for a 3.9L just buy anyone for a 2004 mustang and it will work fine since there is really no difference between the 3.8 and 3.9.

Ok yes I do have a 3.9 and yes I know I can't get V8 while driveing, but I like to have the low rumble while idleing. I have read the sticky, but don't understand it very well. Is there some illistration somewhere where I can look at it and see which is what? I was looking at air filters and I ran across a BBK one that was Cotton. They said 50% better airflow than the stock ones.. is this true? are there any better ones?

Just buy a K & N or Fram Airhog replacement Drop in filter and remove your air silencer. It's cheaper and will give about the same gain. For exhaust you can get an H-pipe adaptor and then run any GT-catback. they have them on americanmuscle.com

No matter what you do you shouldn't really be breaking the bank on either of these mods, since they won't gain you all that much power realistically.

If you want it to sound like a v8 at idle a good exhuast setup is all you need. That mixed with a good cam can really make the v6 sound damn good.

I guess if you cant install a cam then yeah. But its not hard to do really. If you pick up a chiltons or Haynes manual you will see cam swaps on old ford pushrod motors is pretty easy. But thats got nothing ot do with this thread soo back on topic.
