Default 275/40's on an 8inch wide rim(rear) any problems?

I have 17x8inch Cobra R rims on my 99GT. Right now I have 255/40/17 all the way around. I want to upgrade to drag radials on the rear. Do you think 275/40/17's will be ok on this rim? I know its kind of pushing it....anyone have problems with this setup? I don't mind a little buldge. This will be on the rear only...keeping the fronts the way they are.

275's are big on a 9'' rim. not saying you couldnt mount a 275 on an 8'' rim, but I wouldnt.

I have been doing it for years as have many other people with stock bullitt 17x8 wheels. For the back they fit fine and give you more traction and a better look. Here are a few of my car on 275 nittos and 275 street tires out back. Excuse the over inflated tire in the first photo. I had just gotten them put on, and the psi was at 35psi still lol.

20-22psi is what makes them wear very nice and still has good handling and feel. 275s on an 8" are very common on these cars since a 245 drag radial from nitto is so damn small.

No they dont fit properly.... I know what Im talking about. Go to tire rack, they know what there talking about. You guys are opposite the ricers......instead of streaching every inch of the tire you guys buldge the crap out of the tires. If you want 275's do it the right way and get a 9" on up!!

20-22 psi is asking for the bead to roll over.. 36 rear 32 front.. Also depends on the tire... A 275 nitto drag radial may not be as wide as a 275 Sumitomo.

Not when you run a 275 on a 8" wheel that is to much psi for the tire. And the bead is not going to come off. I have many many passes, thousands of miles, and many mountain road (NC when I go in the summer) hard driving passes on 275 tires on 8" wheel.

Don't like a 275 on an 8" wheel, that is totally cool with me everyone has their own opinions. But the fact is that it does fit just fine. And I like the slight tire bulge look, but I'm a hot rodder at heart.

Ill admit it looks a bit too big on the pics i saw but if it fits and doesnt look like hell, go for it rather than spend more money on wheels.

No because you will be running a small sidewall 40 vs 45 and thus they are the same over all size.

I pulled my rear wheels off this weekend and they are 17x9's! For some reason I thought they were 8inchers. So, those 275's should fit nice.
