Well...
It comes on what you want. If you want sound quality and want to keep your speakers longer then you want a sealed box.
If your looking to be loud as hell and dont really care about sound quality then a ported box would be better. The thing with a ported box is that the air pressure after a while starts to wear out the subs quicker and the quality of sound (which is lower already) will decrease dramatcially after a couple of months.
There are speakers made for ported boxes and just being loud but have pretty good quality. A company i think is one of the top ones is Kickers with their Solo Barics L5 or L7

3. Halio Smoked Headlights
4. Smoked Tailights
5. Street Glow Underbodies (Red)
6. Zex Dual Purge Kit with Red LEDs (The Nitrous system is getting installed as we speak)
7. Pioneer touch screen CD player, two P3 12' subs which are molded into my fiberglass rear delete seat kit with 2,400 Rocksford Amp.
8. Two 12' t.v.s molded into my trunk
9. Black with Chrome lip 18' rims with Kumho low profile tires
10. Dual Black Racing stripes
11. Billet *****, power windows etc *****
12. Delete Ant.
13. Steeda Cold Air
14. Red Engine dressing
15. Black Leater Racing Seats
16. 5% tinted windows
17. Dual Flowmaster X pipe

Sealed boxes "hit" cleaner, for music like alternative and rock. The lack of airflow makes them recover faster and not have as much Variation in movement
Ported will have a little wider range, still hit very strong, but they warble better for the low sustained db of music such as rap. Depends on what you listen to... depends on speaker size/amps/and ohms also.

A properly tuned Ported Box will fart out a freq an octave lower than the -6db to -12db mark on the frequency responce to give the feeling that it drops lower than it does.
While it DOES produce lower bass hits, those lower bass hits are a result of the port and not a part of the origional recording.
The port is nothing more than a hemholtz resinator. think of blowing across a bottle and getting that pipe noise.
That is exactly what a ported sub does, just a lot lower.
Ported will usually fart a bit louder than sealed on watt per watt comparison, but sealed will produce smoother cleaner bass.
If yer on a budget, go ported.
If you dont mind spending a little extra for higher quality, nothing beats sealed.
And whatever you do, for the love of god NEVER get the bandpass crap. All they do is fart out one bass note. they suck.

Sealed subwoofers vs ported subwoofers when optimally set up will not have the same cubic volume in the box. Im trying to remember, but i believe sealed boxes must have a larger internal volume than ported right?
or maybe im the other way around.
but i do know that all things being equal, the driver requires a different sized enclosure when going ported vs sealed.

I have 1000watt subs and I am told to vent them out... but I don't play music with the bass way up and I don't listen to rap and pop or anyother music with ALOT of bass
