Using a clay bar is easy to do, but time consuming. First, be sure that the car is VERY clean. I use dishwasher soap to remove as much of the wax as I can.

The clay bar is designed to remove oxidation from the paint as well as things like bugs and tar etc... that is left behind from other means.

You need to use lots of clat bar lubricant which is essentially soap.

If you do this, your car will look awesome:

1 - Wash witth dish soap.
2 - Clay bar the entire car.
3 - Wash again.
4 - Use a good quality paint cleaner such as Sonus or Maguires Step one.
5 - Use a good quality Sealer such as Sonus or Maguires Step 2
6 - Then start adding your wax or wax/polymer blend.
7 - Top it off with a couple coats of high quality carnuba.

I do this process once pear year. Course, I wax often other than that.

My 04 had “grit” all over it… it was so bad you could feel it with your hand just after I washed it. I swear by the thing now, it saved my paint job for sure. I’d consider doing it one or twice a year just to remove all the road contaminates etc from the paint. Of course to do it right, it takes all day (make sure it’s cloudy/cool or in your garage during the process), you wash, dry, clay bar, wash, dry, clean, seal and wax… man, I was happy as hell with it was all over!

The clay bar removes dirt stuck on your paint. It will not harm the paint at all. If you want to know if you need to do it after a washing pass your bare hand across your paint it should feel like glass. If it feels gritty like sand particles on your paint then you need to clay it. Most of the time the hood, roof and trunk are areas that need the most work.

Do you think AutoZone carries this "clay bar"? Is there a specific brand that works the best? When I think of clay, I think of rock (when dried) or playdough when moist. Could you guys give some insight as far as how much pressure to apply, what's the best arm motion to use (like drawing with a crayon, or 360deg arm motion, verticle movement, horizontal passes, etc.)?

I just bought a used '00 GT and the previous owner didn't seem to take good care of his paint. There are bumps (like tar or bug spots) on the paint that I would LOOOOVE to remove. I bought it for 10k (I've been saying 9k but there was tax involved) so I'm hoping to restore it and either keeping it and loving it for the next few years or selling it for around 12k and then buying another one. I buy cars from wholesale dealers so I don't pay extra costs and crap like that. You can take a look at the dealer's website: Americarr. They are located in West Palm Beach, Florida. Very nice people...highly recommended!

Mothers and several other companies have it and its sold at all auto parts stores. Its a soft clay and most important aspect is to make sure that surface is cool and has lots of the lubricator that comes with it. You dont need alot of pressure but if you do it will not do anything as fas as harm the paint. Its really something that I can say its 100 percent safe and will not mess up your paint.

Sweet! Thanks venom...I'll take a look tomorrow after work. Dude, you know what the best part about working at a bank is? Being the only guy there! I friggin' love it! And most of the girls I work with are foreign and are kinky as hell! Don't mean to offend anyone...just stating a fact. Owning a mustang increases the amount of weekly ****y intake....write that down!

BTW, those are some sick stripes on your whip. I wouldn't mind throwin on a set myself.

Any kit will do... Mothers, Meguiar's or Clay Magic... just get the kit because you'll need the extra detailing spray.
