Went Auto-x racing. In the RAIN!
W00t... yeah event was rain or shine and it did both... just one more than the other. The track was soaked and had standing water all over the place the whole day. There were tons of vettes, miatas and S2000's and the obligatory Datsun 510's running amok but the Mustangs present didn't disappoint anyone and were competitive with the rest of the field.
My car... Got stuck in the OSP class which is for pretty heavily modded cars (like mine). Only 1 other car was in OSP though and it came in on a trailer wearing Hoosiers so I'm pretty stoked that I was at least competitive. This was the first sanctioned outing for the beast in its current configuration.
waiting for on-track pics of my run... I was busy driving, couldn't be bothered to snap any other pics.
My buddy Elliot (twinkie)
Track description:
START, 25ft to 90deg left, 50ft to 180deg 2x apex right, 100ft to left-right chicane, exit chicane hard left 90deg into 100ft left-right-left slalom, long left 150deg sweeper exit to 100ft right-left-right-left slalom into hard right reducing radius 170deg, exit to 75ft left-right-left slalom, into 180deg sharp apex left, into 180deg right, 50ft to 90deg sharp left, FINISH
Consider that was in the pouring *** rain. I managed to not hit a single cone and had some pretty interesting throttle steering exercises. Almost every other car spun out at least once.... well except the friggin miatas. Those things are nuts.

I think the best part was when the cops showed up. Well, 1 CHP anyway. He didn't know the event was happening and saw us with like 200 cars and cones and tire squealing... decided to investigate. By investigate I mean he rolled up and said hi, the officials chatted him up and he pulled to the far end of the track and watched for an hour, then left to enforce the law for an hour, then came back for an hour. The whole day he was there and gone in 1 hr shifts. Musta been nice for him to be able to watch and not have to pull over any of us.

Heck yeah! I wanna see more pics. AutoX in the rain makes for an interesting drive. Our first event was in the rain on Saturday, but it dried out on Sunday with some wet patches. We have campus police show us all the time becuase they don't have anything else to do and will do the same thing.

it's so worth it... if you're down for the drive to my area you can meet up with me and the boys and we'll show you the ropes and give you a quick orientation to how it all works so you won't have to deal with the whole first-timer thing. There's another event March 9th at Golden Gate Fields... 50 bucks for non-members. You'll usually get 3 timed runs and any fun runs they can fit in before and after the event. Events are rain or shine as you can see.
What mods do you have? I'll see if I can find out what class you'll be in.

same here.. weekend membership is 15 bucks though bringing it to 50 (assuming howdy isn't a member). You can apply up to 2 weekend memberships toward the cost of an annual membership which is 80 bones IIRC.

When I was on my high schools autox team last year, the local SCCA gave us a break, and let any students on the team in for $10, it was a hell of a deal. Our events had ~100 cars with 3-5 runs depending on the time to do the course.

damn... stuck you in ESP huh. Looks like you know where the fun is. The one I just went to had like 200 cars... it was crazy. Toward the end of the day there were up to 3 cars on the track at a time. Made it hard to never turn my back on a car that was pointing at me.

geeze, 3 cars on the track will keep you wanting to go in the forward direction. Yeah they stuck me in ESP some of the older guys were bitchin' about my CAI and tires, they didn't have a clue what they were saying either, they were like "those are cobra rims(it was when I still had the snake center caps that AM sends with them), and that intake is really helping him out" I had ran some good times the race before so they were out to make me work. By the SCCA guidelines I am in a SP class because the plumbing on the intake was changed, and the tires are wider then any stock width of any year.Whatever though, it was just me and a 98 5spd gt, with 275's on all corners in ESP class. It was a good time though. I find the V6 to have a great balance out there with my 315's. It doesn't have enough power really to break them loose when they are warmed, but because they are so big they grip to almost no end. The biggest thing is I am an automatic and I only have 1st gear to play with.

Your complaining about ESP, I was put in SM my very first time driving in an AutoX. I got enough to put me there though. I don't really try to compete with the others in my class, just try to improve each run. I would have failed a grade on purpose if my high school had an AutoX club.

Hell yesterday and today there was supposed to be a school shooting at either my school or 2 of the others in the area as a retaliation for some "gang violence" where 2 dumbass kids got in an argument and one shot the other.

yeah it was. I think we were the only public high school in the states to have one.

I almost thought about transfering to Baylor after I found out they had and AutoX team and a Mustang as the club car, then I remembered how much it cost to go attend there. I tried to get some guys interested in the regional club here from my college but none of them ever show up at the events. One guy has a S2K and a Porsche something.

that's the hard part.. Not many people are willing to donate a day every other weekend which is really required for any sort of a school sponsored team to campaign a car properly. Don't forget to bring the girls in. They're as likely as we are to get hooked on the rush.
