License Plate Lighting (94-04 models): Bulb #194/168/and sometimes 158

Changing the rear license plate lights can really improve the looks of your mustang at night over the stock halogen bulbs. You can swap those two bulbs out for xenon bulbs (very white with slight blue color) or any color bulb. Of course, the Laws will change from state to state, so check your state's laws first. Alot of people are probably thinking, why would you want to make your license plates more visible to cops? Well, unless you plan on driving like a maniac, you shouldn't have much to worry about. Also, alot of people have custom plates and would like to show them off, so why not show them off at night as well? The bulb # for the rear license plate lights is #194. You will find sometimes that the bulb # might be different, but it will be rare. Most of the time people will refer to this bulb as 194.

Installing the rear license plate bulbs and removing the stock ones is pretty easy, you just have to be careful not to mess up the plastic enclosure. First, you want to get a flathead screw driver and a phillips head screw driver. Stick the flathead screw driver under the plastic retaining screw, and unscrew it with the phillips while you are pulling up with the screw with the flathead. If you do not pull up with the flathead, it will be almost impossible to get the screw out because everytime you un-twist with the phillips it will pop right back in.

Now that the screws are out, the rest of the job is easy as cake. Stick the flathead into the two slotted parts of the plastic piece, and pry it out. I suggest doing one side a little, and then the other side a little, and continue in that motion. This way, the plastic will not bend out of shape or crack.

With the plastic Enclosure out of the trunk lid, you can now change the stock bulb with the bulb of your choice. Untwist the socket from the plastic enclosure by giving it about a 90 degree twist to the left. Now you just remove the stock bulb, and place the new bulb in. If your not going to reuse or save the stock bulb, then DO NOT touch it with your fingers to pull it out. I would use a piece of tissue to install/remove the small 194 bulbs.

Here is a picture of EuroLite xenon 194 bulbs installed for the rear license plate lights on my car:
That is from 3.8mustang.com's lighting write up. I believe you can get bulbs from many places, try ebay, here is a bunch of bulbs... http://www.cardomain.com/shop/search...ds=Bulb+%23194

Good luck!
