New to the "Scene"
Hey guys, I've been lurking around the boards for a little over a month now and decided to make my first post since im close to buying my first car, it being a mustang of course.
My name is Levi and Im 18, 19 next month. I never had much interest in cars before my 16th birthday but I couldn't drive or make any money either ;P Im a computer geek at heart but over the last few years my step brothers have brought me over to the dark side and cars have become my main focus now. Anyway, thats just a little bit about me. I do have a few questions for you folks though. How did you guys/gals get into cars? Were they always something you liked or did your interest grow when you were older? Do any of you have any tips on becoming more familiar with the internal workings of a car? Is just reading alot on the internet a good idea or should I make some friends at a local shop? I didn't take auto in High School and most my friends are mainly into computers so they aren't much help right now either. Im obviously pretty clueless about things but im eager to learn. Im just not sure where to start. =) Thanks for any feedback!
P.S. I could use some buying tips also. :helpsmili Is there a specific year thats better then another? Is there a certain price range and mileage I should be looking out for? I'd like to find a mustang around 8k but im willing to go as high as 10k. GT's are out of the question solely because of the 500 dollars a month for insurance. Thats even under my step fathers insurance!

Welcome!!
Well here's my short story.. when I was about 15 back in 99 I saw the 99 Mustangs and fell in love instantly. Before that time I didn't care about cars at all or even driving. I shortly got a 1995 V6 because I was just a broke HS kid back then. I wasnt much into racing or modding at that point. In September of 04 I finally found an 99-04 GT locally that was a manual. I had looked FOREVER to find one at a local dealership. When I saw it I fell in love instantly.. and that's how I ended up with my 2003 GT. After I got it I started becoming more active over at Stangnet, which I had registered at back in 01. I honestly knew nothing about racing until my dad drove the 03 GT when we were test driving it and gave it hell. After that I had a run in with a LT1 camaro and ended up beating him and it started this whole deal with wanting to get more horsepower. My dad was a big drag racer back in the day.. and I use to go to races with him when I was little, so I think all of this was bound to happen either way.
To be honest.. like I said I knew nothing about cars or racing and most of the stuff I have learned I've picked up from forums and from my dad. The best thing to do is just find the right people to get information from, because unfortunately there are a TON of people who go around saying things about cars/racing that's completely wrong. Which is what is so good about forums because usually people who do this get called out by the more informed members
As far as what to look for in a mustang.. I prefer the 03-04 models over all of them. I dunno why lol, I guess just cuz they were the last 2 years for that model. It just depends on how desperate you are for a mustang, because the 99's look slightly different then the later styles. I would say I got lucky on finding my car. What do you mean by 500 dollar insurance? 500 for 6 months or 500 a month? I pay $190 a month under my parent's policy for full coverage insurance. I could tell you, when I had my v6 was I so envious of GT's.. and I didn't even know about racing at the time lol.

Well... I guess it could be because he has his Dodge Dakota, his older son's Dodge Dakota and his younger sons V6 Mustang. Could that be jacking up the price for insurance on a GT? Damn this stuff is confusing. >.< I guess it is true what they say, buying a house is easier then buying a car these days.

quick advice, dont buy a v6, you will instantly want to trade it in for a GT, they are slow, like really really slow, i hated my v6, i regret everyday buying it. I lost so much money with that v6, paid $12k for it, i traded it in and got $6k for it. i then found a 2003 GT with 60,000 miles for $10,5k and fell in love with it.

I wanted a GT to begin with but the insurance is just way too much for me right now. I figure I start out with a V6, build some credit by paying that off and then seeing if insurance for a GT is reasonable. During that time I can also start learning more and more about mustangs and just cars in general.

(unless its something like "how do I mount my underglow?" then you'll just get flamed)

By the way, where do you live and how old are you PureStang? 80 dollars for car insurance on a GT is incredibly low, atleast what my parents have been telling me.
