wicked... there's no reason to go with "headers" unless you're taking steps to really stretch out the power band. You can use stock 4.6L manifolds at the cost of maybe 20hp or so on a well done motor and few hassles getting the motor in. You'll have to grind on a little bump on the passenger side manifold but it's nothing big. You can also use FRPP shorty headers and they'll work right out of the box.

Any retard exhaust shop can fit a set of long tubes in your car. If that's what's holding you up then drop your car off at the exhaust shop with a 5.4L in it and give em a day. It's not hard.

The problem w/ headers is w/ the steering linkage on the driver side header. The taller deck height of the 5.4 pushes the header further up so the header needs to be opened up around the steering linkage. To bad Saleen330 isn't still on since he tried a set and he probably would know exactly what would need to be done. Otherwise, the only things that'll fit w/ little or no modification are the stock manifolds or the FRPP "shorties".

I had the FRPP shorties on my car once.

IMO they are nothing more then a tubular, stock manifold and not worth the money.

The amount of grinding and cleaning up I had to do to them to make them worth putting on the car, could have done the same difference to the stock manifolds. One of them was damn near a ceramic coated stock manifold.

I've also read some mention about them cracking, although I personally had no issues for the 3 months I had them.

I wonder how much of a PITA it would be to modify some Lightning LT headers ?

Agreeded, the FRPP units are nothing more than tubular manifolds but they do offer a slight improvement (5hp tops). Lightning headers won't work because they are not designed for use in the Mustang since the Lightning has more rrom than the Mustang which the header company probably took advantage of. If you want to modify headers, you need to modify headers made for Mustangs.

Well maybe 5hp and some torque. Also, see how much a set of cast iron manifolds vs. a set of tubular headers weighs???? thats the big thing. The 5.4 already adds weight so why put more on, right?

Yeah but if you figure that 100 lbs=.1 sec at the 1/4 mile, then the weight you save means very little for performance.

well i guess you might be correct. but every little bit helps and i also heard that the tubular headers makes your exaust sound so much better and on the + side of things, you don't have to grind to fit right?

Looking at these pics, I really do not see it being a problem to custom fab some LT headers.

I'm curious about the drivers side though, how the steering shaft itneracts with all of this.

I'm assuming you powdercoat wheels too, seeing as yours magically changed color when you added the new hood

Man, there is just too much to read through to get the information I need. Here are my questions:
1. What search items are ya'll using on car-part.com to find your shortblocks for $300 or less?
2. I have a 2001 Bullitt and it has a different Idler pulley set-up than regular GT's, but same mounting hole locations. Can I re-use all my 4.6l Bullitt stuff.
3. Anyone know the part number for the Reichard Racing plates? Their site only shows plates for DOHC. Is there a better option now? I already have a Bullitt intake!!!
4. What 5.4 timing cover is most like the 2001-up 4.6 GT covers?
Thanks and sorry to be such a newb!!!

lists are good.

I found both of mine on craigslist. Both were luck and nothing more.

your front cover will change and so will many of the minor details of belt routing and accessory location. You'll be able to deal with them very easily. Don't trip on it. You'll use your existing accessories and brackets for the most part but you need to make sure to get a complete front cover.

Nope but they had 4 sets left at last count. Call em up. You'll have to search for "reichard racing phone". I found it on like the 4th link with google.

myillwill has the front cover details I think..

well... the price of my spare set of plates just went way way way up.

I'll get on the horn with some folks and see about what's up with their design.

Well, shoot..if I can't get plates I guess I need to trash the 5.4 idea.
R3d...have boxed those pistons yet? I guess I'm gonna do a 4.6 build.

Tim Barth of Modular Powerhouse told me today that RR was out of business...

and again due to unforseen surcumstances, ALL my 5.4 stuff is for sale (company is slow, and i think i pissed off the wrong German )

I have a set of adapter plates that Dan Simmons made (the guy who did the write up in 5.0 mag)

i may even end up having to sell the car...
